P1i vs P1i: How is yours ? |

Well, the subject of my post actually applies to all mobile phones and due to my extremely pedantic nature (especially for electronics) I am always having hard times when I go out to buy a mobile phone.
I usually have to check several shops in town to find the (almost) perfect phone - and sometimes I can't.
Now, after having sold my P1i a few weeks ago (due to flaking camera button and squeaky battery cover) I convinced myself to get another one, although I am well aware that my new P1i will have the same problem after a few months.
But considering the fact that I almost never use a device for more than a few months I decided to get another one, because I really like the esthetic of this phone, which is currently one of the best imo.
Now the close-to-perfect P1i.
It goes without saying that, first of all, it has to be 100% functional (incl. no dead pixels) and no squeaking parts, but as you might guess, this is not enough for me.
Here is my top three criteria - I can't buy a P1i which has one or all of them.
1. Loose strap holder
Some of the P1i's have a very firm strap holder while others have a loose one with space of 0,5 - 1,0 mm.
2. Gap betwen frames:
This is at the left and right bottom, where the metal front plate and plastic back frame are screwed together.
On some devices there is almost no space (maybe 0,1-0,2 mm) at the bottom end of these parts, while on others there is a gap of 0,5-1,5 mm.
3. Brand plate:
This is the plate with 'P1i' on it.
It's a very thin adhesive plastic plate which is affixed on the metal frame.
Only some (or should I say 'very few') of the P1i's in the shops have a brand plate with a 100% plain surface.
Hold & move your P1i slowly under a light source and check the upper and lower end of the plate for refractions.
After checking more than a dozen of them I've finally found one.
Here it is with an absolutely plain surface:
Btw, it's not my intention to spoil anyone's enjoyment of the P1i..
Just thought I'd share

I have had 2 P1's in my time. No problems with this one but with my first one I had a problem on the silver strip on the back. For some reason I was able to push it down a milimeter or so down from the left/or right (cant remember) side. It was more an annoyance than anything else but other than that touchwood everything has been fine.

I have solved squeaky cover, battery lid and loose HPM 82 plug with unoticable modifications and it is solid like a piece of rock.
Good thing you are observant for defects. Anyway check out the loose camera module, squeaky battery lid as well. |

I guess I have a good one then, as the only "issue" I have is the bendy silver strip on the back, which I quite frankly hardly notice 'till somebody points it out - thanks for that btw |

yep, crappy build...
Mine has wawy brandname plate, wawy black plastic on the sides, but everything else is kinda OK.
I dislike that the front is made of metal, and the back of plastic. They should be both the same, no matter plastic or metal (I prefer metal). The Siemens S65 shares the same feature, metal frot, plastic back...
The back silver strip is kinda bent in the middle, I guess excessive force was used to set it in, and it cracks a little when pressed lightly...
IMO, the flagship product should not have these flaws. I am not sure if I'll buy another SE flagship in the future...

Or maybe that of a conscious customer, who knows what to expect, not only technically, but also physically ?
But, yeah, ignorance is bliss.
And that's why (unlike in other sectors) mobile phone manufacturers (incl. market leader) can afford crappy workmanship, poor quality control & final inspection and a nonexistent customer support.

Maybe you should, as this is a forum and not a sandpit.

It's weird how SE's build quality has taken a nose dive of late, maybe they're letting the accountants run the buisiness now |

OK.. and I thought I was an annoying customer just because I want a perfect screen, buttons, camera and no major squeeking. This is just nuts.
Tiny defects on, especially cellphones, are always there. Manufacturers let through non perfect phones for the resellers because it is almost impossible to get them all perfect. Try not to look for them, but if you still notice something that annoy you, go back to the store then. |

My P1 is just fine, but the only thing that annoys me is that the back part of the panel is plastic and the front is metal. I mean why isn't the back part of the panel metal like the front one? I know the answer but i don't like it ;/
