"It turns out that Sony Ericsson intends to continue working with DoCoMo by initially delivering new models through mid ‘08, at which point it will start buying handsets from other manufacturers and rebranding them. In other countries this would be truly egregious, but as our Japanese bureau points out, DoCoMo lays out very strict requirements for each of its lines that would probably make it difficult to distinguish a true Sony Ericsson model from a rebranded model sourced from, say, Sharp or Toshiba."

I really hope not - DoCoMo's Partnership with Sony Ericsson has spawned some smashing handsets - it would be a shame to see them ditch DoCoMo!

However, I'd be disappointed to see Sony Ericsson buying and rebranding handsets - after all, its the Japanese market that determines trends!

Although, if Sony Ericsson dissolve the DoCoMo relation altogether, and strengthens its links with au by KDDI further, I feel we will see some even better handsets from Sony Ericsson in Japan.

So, either Sony Ericsson continue as they are, or they dissolve the NTT relation completely, and go solo with au by KDDI.

If they are, then a good move on part of Sony Ericsson - after all, Sharp & Sony are two major players in Japans Electronic market.

Interesting comment, Bart - please, expand on that comment!

Hey Guys - Yahoo Singapore, update via Reuters as of March 10, 2008 says:

'Sony Ericsson spokesman Toshiyuki Kawamura said the firm had no plans to terminate product development for DoCoMo phones and that it had no intention to buy phones from other Japanese cellphone makers on an original equipment manufacturing basis for shipments to DoCoMo.

In an OEM deal, a manufacturer makes products under a buyer's brand name. Kawamura said, however, that Sony Ericsson is reviewing its product strategy for DoCoMo. He declined to elaborate.

Sony currently makes Sony Ericsson phones for the Japanese market.

Sony Ericsson is the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker but ranks just sixth in the Japanese market, whose heavy development costs make it tough to turn a profit.'

So, are they really withdrawing, or is it just THE media...

And, as I have always said from the very beginning, its SONY who develop the Sony Ericsson handsets for the Japanese Market, and ERICSSON for the European market!! Thats confirmed - in an official Press Release!

I cant see it happening, after all - withdrawing from a network (DoCoMo) that supplies handsets such as the Nokia N Series to the Japanese would be a major disappointment in Sony Ericsson's fight for the number one spot!

A few years ago their was an agreement between Sharp and SE to work together on developing phones for the Japanese market. It was we saw some good sharp phones on the european market.
Since many of the Japanse phones do the same things and work the same way, it would be a good move to save some costs, because like said before its hard to get profit selling phones on the Japanse market.
But must phone makers see it as a big live test for all the upcomming technology.
