Hi guys, I've been searching hi and low for a way to do this but it's just so hard and I cant find a solution.
I've downloaded an ebook with a format of .chm (http://rapidshare.com/files/44367580/OXHCLINM.rar if u guys want to have a go and help me figure it out). I can't seem to open it with the P1i (symbian UIQ 3)although I can view it with the computer. What should I do to get it working?
Also, what other programs should I download in case there are ebooks in other formats as well so I don't have to search again in the future! Seriously, I've been seraching for a few hours now and its killing me!
So please if anyone could help by telling me how could I read a .chm ebook which i downloaded on the P1i and also tell me what other prograns I should download for other ebooks in the future with different formats.
Thanks alot and your input is much appreciated!
thyethye!

I use a reader called Mobipocket to read ebooks on my P1, it only will let you view files in its' own format (.prc). They do however sell creation software that can covert from MSword (.doc), the reader is a free download btw, they also sell compatible ebooks through their website http://www.mobipocket.com
Hope this helps:

what about extracting it to html? im not really sure. any hints? would mobireader open .html files then?
thanks. |

Mm..the joys of single platform formats, and bribing companies to adopt the format in order to conserve the consumer- base without competing on the actual quality of the service. Can you really blame Microsoft for having fun with all that, and earning money by forcing you to buy their software? It's just business, isn't it?
But yeah. You need to convert "microsoft- compiled html" into something else - html, for example. How, I'm not sure, but there's bound to be some hack around somewhere (and no doubt a lot of licensed solutions). And then you could import it in mobipocket creator and save it as something else, or just view the html.

Right. Only Mikkesoft reader can read the .chm (known as Compiled html/Compiled help- file/Microsoft- compiled html).
(Which is produced by a number of their developer products, not just for internal help- files... for unbeknownst reasons having to do with brilliant market- strategy).
Solution: don't buy .lit or .chm files. Don't trust it's possible to painlessly convert chm to html - and start using platform- independent solutions instead, or at least formats that are documented and portable across platforms.
btw: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Compressed_HTML_Help
(But note the "free" method dumps the files in tiny small files depending on the structure in the document.)

Yep, but here's the trick - once you have it in html, open it in Word, save it to .doc, then create to mobipocket with the creator - bit labourious though..... |

right, i've converted it to html, but there are lots of files and folders now.
how do i change it to .doc? one by one will take a while cause its quite a lot of files and folders. or did i just convert it to .html wrongly?
regarding free books in mobipocket format, what is its format actually?
and also, i cant find the book i want on mobipocket. its a medical book as im a medical student. oxford handbook of clinical medicine if anyone knows where to find it?
thanks again for those who help!

You only need to open the files (they end in .htm), the folders should have the same names as the files, as they'll just be the images etc. referenced to in each of the files - so it's not as bad as it looks
Open the first HTML (MHT - see below!!) file in MSword (right click - open with), keep it open, then open the next, selectall and append it to the first, repeat for all of the files, when you have them all in a single word window, choose file - save as, and save the entire thing as a word document (.doc). There is an issue with pctures though, as they end up being linked, ie. they dont exist in the final document - so if you move it or the original html folders, they won't apperar any more.
EDIT!!! I think I've found a workaround for the pictures issue, you FIRSTopen each of the HTML files in internet explorer, then choose file - save as - web archive, single file (.mht).The pictures are now embeded in the file, so that when you convert to doc in word they are actually held within the document, and not simply linked to as an outside resource
Mobipocket files have the extension .prc, if you get hold of the creation software you can import .doc files into a blank publication, build it, and then view it on your phone with the free reader.
Hop this all makes sense!!

Sorry if I blinded you with science, but it really is pretty straightforward. Just a matter of openning your files in one format, saving them in another with internet explorer, openning your new files in word and adding them together to make a single document.
.html to .mht with IE
put all your mhts together in word
save to .doc
OR as a shortcut you can use this:
http://www.processtext.com/abcchm.html
(there's a free demo)
to convert your original CHM file to a single HTML file that you can then open in word, and save as .doc.....
