w810i turns off due to Battery drain while using GPRS even while using USB cable. |

I have been facing this weird problem recently.
I access internet on my Toshiba laptop using Airtel (India) EDGE service with my Sony Ericsson W810i.
I have an unlimited data transfer plan so leave the laptop with the connection on in the nights to download movies / games etc. I get decent speeds of around 20KBps.
I recently noticed that sometime in the night the connection used to disconnect. I first diagnosed it to the service problem.
But I also noticed one strange thing. My phone had switched off since battery was low. the cable was still conected
I use the provided USB cable to connect the phone to the laptop. SO the phone is also charging while I connect it to the net. The phone shows the battery charging logo.
Now i have one question. If my phone is being charged by the cable how does the battery drain so fast.
I also tried one test.
I discharged the battery to about 20% and connected the phone to my laptop to let it charge via the USB cable. I charged decently to about 90% in about an hr. Which mean it charges fine.
NOW the question I have to put forth is can the following happen.
Can the battery drain of using an energy guzzling activity (using EDGE to connect to internet) be more than the charging capacity of the USB cable?
Doesn’t the W810i hardware circuitry have something like if battery is low use the power from the USB connection?
Or is to something to do with my laptop. But the same happened on my Desktop as well.

Charging with USB cable does not show correct % thats what I have noticed.
Also charge does not hold up and it takes times than a usual charger.
Tested this on a W950i and a K800i, many others too will be knowing about this.
GPRS does drain the battery fast.

I too ave noticed that charging is slower on the USB cable than than charger.
but does this mean that the phone will just turn off inspite of it being connected via the cable.
sound really surprising to me. |

possible that rate of draining is faster than rate of charging lol

you could get a cst-75 charger (or equivalent for india) that allows piggyback connection of the USB cable.
I think the charging current is low when you use USB to charge for various reasons. |

Check whether USB charging is enabled or disabled from the secret service menu. To check press star right star left left star left star on standby screen. Where star means * key and left and right mean pressing the navigation pad left or right. |

in this menu i see three option
service info

text labels.
wher to find hte option of enabling usb charging. btw the phone does charge. i can see it fro mthe chargin indicator. |

first of all... make sure you have the latest firmware in your phone.
Since USB charging doesn't give the same power as charging with an ordinary charger, there is always a theoretical chance of it draining if it uses more power that then usb cable can supply. Using it as a modem connected to your laptop can probably be one such thing. |

You might like to also try checking what the signal strength is like - when the signal strength is lower, the phone must use more power to communicate with the network. If you are able to move the phone to improve its signal strength, then this might allow it to not run out of power.
Also, if you experiment, you might be able to limit your download speed slightly, allowing the phone to stay turned on - if you are able to limit your speed to (for example) 15KB/sec, this might allow it to continue to download through the night, since it will require less power for the phone to manage.
Also, tricks like turning off bluetooth on the phone - this drains power which is obviously something you need to conserve! |
