Create a new folder and name it "CON" or "con" on windows XP. Before you delete that new folder, open it and type "bush hid the facts" without the speach marks. close the folder and save the contents. Now re-open that same folder.

Why oh why?????

Yeah, there are quite a few, LPT13 is one I believe...

It's a legacy from the old days. Windows has some reserved names from the early days of windows 3.11, 95 etc. that are still in force now. Back then, windows sat on top of DOS rather like how UIQ sits on top of symbian, rather than being a true operating system by itself like it is now.

So, some of the old DOS commands and parameters were 'banned' from windows in order to prevent DOS getting confused when the folder or filename was passed to it. It's the same reason as why most programming languages won't let you name variables, functions, classes, libraries etc. the same as any existing programming commands within that particular language, it would bugger everything up!

So there you go, you'll all sleep better tonight

strange. I read that any any combination of 4 3 3 5 letters words would cause this

so

abcd efg hij klmno

or

bill fed the goats

etc etc, would also do it

edit: just tested various 4 3 3 5 combinations on my wifes xp laptop and it does work with any random stuff that I tried
edit2: btw, I have the file any old name like testtest.txt

I think 4 3 3 5 is also the ascii encoding error that causes notepad to screw up too.

There's definately some legacy banned folder and filenames in XP so it could be coincidence I guess.
