Is it ok for the k850i...??? I mean i would like to jump for the 8GB version but I'm going to be very dissapointed if the phone doesn't like it (and not sure how/where I can check).

I'm waiting on delivery of an 8gb micro SD myself and since the 4 and 6gb work there is no reason to doubt the 8gb

The K850i will support upto 32bg with a firmware update and when the cards have been released of course.

who do you say it needs a firmware update?
M2 and SDHC standards are not size dependant and there is no reason for SE to specifically limit the capacity

Cards are not size dependable, however software is.
I see it every day in my job, Bios and software issues
Card Readers are the biggest problem. Some card readers read 2gb and 4 gb cards fine, however some dont with out a software or a firmware update.
Cameras are the same, I have one camera that can only read upto 1gb and my sony up to 8gb.
Computers are the same, About 6 years ago most computers couldnt read anything above 20gb drives, so new hard drives wernt seen correctly and on some hard drives had jumpers on to limit them, however most computer manufactures put a new firmware for the public to download so that people could update the bios to allow larger hard drives. Same thing happened a few years later with 120gb drives, some computers couldnt see them correctly.
Windows XP is the same, Windows XP may struggle to see more that 3gb of memory even though the Bios of the Computer may show 4gb (If you have 4gb installed). This is because the software kernal needs to be re wrote.
Its all down to software. |

Yes its all about software, but I understood there was something fundamentally different about the way memorysticks work - I thought all the recent SE phones would take whatever size of memory card you threw at them.
Has anyone got personal 1st hand experience of a recent SE phone not accepting a large memory card? |

I decided to ask Sony UK myself and sent in a support question. I specifically asked if the K850i supported the 8GB microSD card. They replied, "We can confirm that the Sony Ericsson K850i supports up to a 4GB MicroSD Memory Stick."
Take that as you will. Either they've not tested it with the 8GB card or they have tested it and the performance wasn't up to scratch so they don't recommend it. I have no idea. Judging by a few complaints I've seen regarding performance with the 8GB card I'd say that the K850i may not be up to utilising it properly from a performance perspective. Best to stick to 4GB cards. Ah well...
Cheers,

according to Sandisk the 4gb and 8gb M2 have exactly the same performance (Read/write: 10MB/sec read, 3MB/sec write) so why should the K850 have difficulty with the performance on the 8gb?

I don't know the technical details of reading microSD cards, however, I imagine it's perfectly possible that, for example, there are data structures which need traversing which are twice the size on 8GB cards compared to 4GB cards. If you have twice the amount of music it takes twice as long to index what's on the card which may mean unacceptably slow performance. The phone takes longer to traverse the card which means that it can't schedule other tasks in a timely manner which makes the phone less responsive. Lots of possibilities really.
I might ask them some further questions to illicit more information on the reasons why they don't recommend 8GB cards but I'm not sure how much info I'll get.
Cheers,

Hi jahman
It may take longer to index but that is surely due to their being more Data and surely it only needs to index once? So i really fail to see how that is in the long run going to be slower or more inconvienant than having to swap between two cards.
