the play/pause, skip track are handle by touch sensitive buttons outside of the screen on the w960i, the person who is doing the conversion has already got these to function on the 1,2&3 buttons of the p1i

If it works, I think I will paint the "play/pause" "next" "previous" buttons above the "1" "2" "3" buttons, on the space available on the black plastic.
The P1i will become the W1i!

How about that?

that is a sweet idea, especially since some people are annoyed by that wasted space, but it would have to look better than that, and it would be very hard to make it look professional. also people would end up thinking you could press them lol.

i like this idea as ive always felt that the empty bar was a waist of space. there has to be a vinyl sticker out there that can be simply place on the bar as opposed to drawing or having to etch it in.

I hope this hack gets done soon its the only thing keeping me from buying the w960i

thats a good solution, there's probably a site which would let you design a sticker online to your dimensions, they make it and send it to you.

i think it's almost stupid to buy a w960i if you can do this conversion, have you seen the white sides to the w960i, the stylus, the smudging, fingerprints and dust, the worse battery, lack of card slot, lack of back button on side, no desk charger, etc.

All you gain is a flat screen (ok that's cool), good headphones(ebay), 8gig(M2), software(THIS CONVERSION). Plus the average person will look at the keypad and think it's a run-of-the-mill SE. I'll take the P1i thanks and convert it, buy an M2 and headphones AND save money!

I agree with most of your points thats why im still holding out. Especially after reading that 12-16 gb sd cards are already being made by sandisk, i figure m2 cards cant be to far behind.

The one thing i do wish was the possibility of different colored housing to truly give the p1i a more personal look. I have to say that the look of the w960i has always been appealing to me, minus the white sides and whit keypad lights. I always thought this could have been orange like other W series phones.

I have ordered an extra housing from ebay that I'm going to make matte black.. (what will be very nice with the glossy black) I do this with a lot of devices, with very good results... btw the w960i is nice but has a very ugly plastic looking big white side that made me very glad I chose for the stylish 70/80ties sony design p1i earlier. And I really can't miss the qwerty anymore..

Yes, you got this fw. but with no QWERTY and with no M2 support.
I check offten the czech forum where everything started, for any progress in this issue, but looks little bit stuck to me

yeah, i dont even think i wanna do it anymore,
I've went off the idea because i don't want a P1i business phone with walkman written all over it.

you can just get a w960i(ish) theme(no walkman written all over it), a media player with walkman3 theme(like having a walkman app).

You will still be able to control music from today screen, only thing i may regret not having is the ability to hide all the shortcuts and the transparency.
