Really high-end Symbian Foundation Xperia devices are promised for next year according to Matts Lindoff, Sony Ericsson Chief Technology Officer.

Read scotsboyuk's article over at USEB.

Now I'm wondering what kind of specs a really high end device would have.

Sound's great, but- how could it be SF if (apparently) SF won't be ready until 2010? All the same, I look forward to more Xperia devices Cmon SE, something with X1 specs, plus a C905 standard camera and an accelerometer. Don't care which OS too much, Would like hardware QWERTY to stay if possible, and preferable would be a screen with more colours. But to be concise- give me the right feature set SE

My theory about these UIQ concepts is that they are going to be contributed into SF once that comes along. Its in the concept stages now, and the code isnt written yet since the OS is not released yet. When you think of it, UIQ barely has anything to contribute to SF- perhaps a menu addition or two, a method of using shortcuts maybe, perhaps some better coding, and a couple of pointers on touchscreen tech. But even that sounds very shallow when you think that S60 is by far the main component of SF, and it has its own touchscreen tech going for it (albeit not as refined). So these concepts could make that worthwhile addition from UIQ.

From what I gathered he was saying they will launch a Symbian Foundation handset next year (as in only one) and that there will also be really high end Xperia devices.

Btw, Sony Ericsson is announcing their third quarter results on October 17. Is announcement supposed to take place on that day?

@Tigershark,
SF os should be ready by h2 2009, and their first devices should be out in H2 2009.

"We will launch a Symbian Foundation handset in the next year. There will be really high-end Xperia devices."

It seems to me that the context of these two statements was the same. i.e high end devices.

If he was talking about two different devices he might have said:

"We will launch a Symbian Foundation handset in the next year and there will be really high-end Xperia devices."

or "We will launch a Symbian Foundation handset in the next year. There will be really high-end Xperia devices too."

I hope there are high end symbian devices as it will interesting to see how they are progressing with this particular OS. He stated that a big part of choosing WM for the X1 was to break into the US market so I'm assuming the strategy for the non - US market will be somewhat different, using non WM smartphones.

Right you are. I just checked the SF website. It says they will start 'operating' (whatever that means- presumably allowing use of the unified OS) in H1 2009. So it makes sense for devices to pop up in H2. Even better.

Its a good news, and is actually making me reconsider buying the x1i, if it would come out sooner.
