no windows mobile device I have ever used has a default code
if you want to apply a device lock you first have to set a code

a soft reset won't do it and to be honest, I have done so few hard resets, I can't recall if that resets the lock code.
anyway, in the start menu somewhere there should be a "clear storage" icon. click that and enter 1234 and it will do a hard reset

hmm.. well I just googled and confirmed on several sites that this is the hard reset sequence for the qtek 8300/imate sp5 etc etc
edit: while holding the two soft keys you have to press and hold the power button until you see a message appear, perhaps you didn't hold the power button long enough?

Keep holding all three keys down, till the phone asks if you want to clear the memory.
Hope, this helps .

Don't remember how long it takes, took some time though, so try holding them a bit longer.
