Help my friend's laptop. |

So here's the deal. My friend just got her laptop back from a repair shop and part of the repair including a reinstall of XP. However, the guy has gone online and downloaded things like AVG and ZoneAlarm. Now, we're connecting it to my network, and whenever she opens IE7, it redirects her to this webpage about a company called FON. No matter what I set the homepage to.
I'm hoping someone here might know how to sort this, because I'm stumped. There's nothing unusual in the processes.
Cheers guys |

Maybe the repair shop used a FON router and there are some cookies left now?

There are no cookies, its annoying, you can't navigate away from the page, it's locked onto it.

sure its not the router that your connecting to, seems to be like a configuration page for the make of your router..if so you need to configure the internet before it will work

And while your at it, purchase a large lump of lead. Much like Firefox, it's out there and available to get, but is there any point to doing it?
My opinions on this forum are that of my own and not of the company I work for. |

OK guys, it can't be the router because my computer is fine. If I can't navigate to the internet then I can't download anything to it. Plus I don't have a USB drive to transfer the installs.

Have you checked the hosts file? Navigate to here:
c:windows\system32\drivers\etc and make sure that hidden files are visible in the folder options dialogue.
Look for a file called 'hosts' (it doesn't have a file extension), right click on it and open with notepad. If you can't find it, just do an all files search for 'hosts'.
You should see something like this:
# Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
# For example:
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
If there are any other entries below '127.0.0.1 localhost' just delete them so that the hosts file ends up looking exactly like it does above. Then, save it (using 'save as' instead of save) making sure that you select 'all files' instead of 'text documents' in the save as dialogue.
Another thought, and it sounds obvious I know, but have you checked 'add / remove programs' in control panel? FON is not spyware and so if it's software that's causing the redirect, it shouldn't be hidden.
Next up, how is your friend's wireless connection managed? Is it using the built in windows wireless manager or third party software? If it's third party, try switching it off and using the windows manager instead.
