Do you still have to hand your credit card details over when you sign up even though they don't take any money? If you don't, I'll give it a go

I was actually hoping for a quick answer yesterday before I start filling the form out but never mind 
I did it the other day, filled in three big forms for a "free trial" and then right at the end it wanted my credit card number. I really object to that, you should get the free trial first before they ask you for payment details.
