Hi,
it works pretty much the same like upgrading a non Generic World P990 to R6. You have to change the CDA of the phone. I did it with Kulankendi and changed it from Generic World 1 to CDA162008/66 for Generic Netherlands. (There are quite a lot of threads regarding how to change the CDA).
If you run SE Update Service then, you will get R5A17.
You won't be able to restore Backups made with R6 or R5 afterwards because PC Suite will say your phone is not compatible.
To restore a backup you have to go to the registry: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Teleca\Mobile Connectivity Suite\Backup Manager\3.0\Backup Engine\Backups]
There is a list of all your current backups. Each Backup hides behind a Numer like: 128160433472780000
Behind each number is another registry key: BackupDeviceVersion
If you change its Value from R6D23 or R5A17 to R5A16 - PC Suite will allow to restore the backup.
I just restored Contacts, Calendar, Messages and Notes. Everything works fine since then.
Many greetings
Dominique

Thanks for sharing dominique.
But this means that we must know what is the latest firmware of the targeted CDA on SEUS? In your case it was R5A13.
It will be nice if we can find a way to cheat SEUS to flash our p990 R6 with existing R5 files that we copied into the blob.fs folder. i.e. skip the downloading of new R6 files. Any guru out there able to mod the SEUS exe file?

Hi,
you have to know which CDA will result in which firmware version. But you can get this information here.
Then you just change to a CDA with the desired firmware version.
Of course you have to be quite desperate to do that - but some people are.
Many greetings
Dominique

why you want to downgrade? the R6 is much more stable than R5 |

@Nokku - The R6 maybe is more stable than the R5 firmware, there are also some bugs fixed. But the problem is that there are some new bugs appeared that some users cannot live with them so they want the old R5 firmware back. After all I would downgrade too. In my opinion there is a bug which turns the phone into a "phone". Actually when we use the phone without flip (with R6) the space button (and that is meant to turn on the phone so we can dial numbers) does not work well so we must enter the phone menu from everywhere elase except from the assigned button for that function... There are some other new bugs too so the phone stability isn't the only point when upgrading a firmware.

| Use CellPhone Space, a free program that solves that bug.

In some ways it is, but it creates a real problem with TomTom as you can no longer recive or make calls whilst it is running! and it mucks up automatic email downloads at pre determined times. Cheers Sony Ericsson you have excelled yourselves
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot. |

i noticed with R5 you could make a SMS and the latest contacts stay in a recently sent contacts menu to save you going through your phone book and ticking a contact?
R6 is pony
for me its step back
then again i would'nt mind reverting to R5 for this reason... can i do it for free?? |

Hey ares good to see you back! I have tried this again today and it is still causing me probs, let me explain.
I can make a call now but cant get back to TomTom the phone freezes and requires a restart
Incomming calls are automaticaly handled by the phone not to my BT headset and I cant find a way of retrieving them in the headset.
Heeeeelp!!

Go to Control panel -> Call settings -> Handsfree and enable the option "Always route answered calls to Bluetooth".
