Question about P1i and W960i |
arch6 Joined: Jun 13, 2003 Posts: 19 From: New Zealand PM |
Hi, I just want to know the main difference between these two phones, mainly interested in the software side of things.
On the hardware side, its mainly just the keyboard and memory difference.
But since they both run UIQ, does that mean that the W960i can do everything that the P1i can do? And the only thing W960i has over the P1i is the walkman software (the P1i can still play mp3 right?)?
When the P1i was announced, I thought that it would be my next phone (currently I have a S700i) because I wanted a phone with PDA functions. I have reservations over the P1i qwerty keyboard because I m so used to a normal phone keyboard (e.g. the 2 button is ABC) and have never used a qwerty keyboard (P1i style or normal qwerty).
But now the W960i is announced, it seems to do everything that the P1i can and more, although I dont care about the walkman software.
So can anyone clear this up for me?
Will the W960i do everything that the P1i will, ignoring the hardware differences (keyboard and memory)?
I know that currently there may not be enough info on the W960i yet, such as the amount of RAM etc., but I guess can also be applied to the M600i/W950i.
Thanks |

@arch6
It is a Walkman smart phone that is why it has the Walkman app it's main selling point is that, it has an 8Gb drive and fast Music Transfer so that's the only difference i can see. It is meant otherwise to have the same spec as the P1 both Ram and processor.

Thanks Marc.
I thought the W960i also have Wifi, at least that what the the article on the front page said. http://www.esato.com/news/article.php/id=1681
Yeah, I know that the Walkman thing is its big sell point.
But I just want to know that if I got the W960i, I wasn't getting any less features than the P1i (apart from the qwerty keyboard, which is actually a bonus for me).
So:
W960i = P1i - qwerty + 8GB (thus no extension slot) + Walkman?
If thats the case I will probably have to wait for the W960i.
Hopefully it doesn't come out much longer after the P1i.
I can't stand the wait.

You've never used a normal QWERTY keyboard? How the hell did you post this then? |

I meant I've never used a full qwerty keyboard on a phone.

i would wait for the W960. it has basically the same features plus a 8GB drive. if you have no expansion slot i think it's not a problem, because 8GB should be enough, don't you think...or you get the P1i with loads of memory sticks...i would prefer the first one.
as for the keyboard: the P1i has a strange keyboard layout like the M600i, so go and try that one and you will find out if you like it. you won't be able to write like on a pc though as the keys have several functions. so in the end you can go for the classic numerical keypad that you are used to anyway and the one on the W960 seems to be the best offered on a smartphone by sony ericsson by far!
and the W960 just looks much better...P1i looks like my nearly 20 year old calculator.... |

@wabre:
You're post completely sums up what I've been thinking about.
I think that 8Gb is plenty too. If I got the P1i, i was just going to get a 4Gb card which is enough for me.
As for the keyboard, I always preferred the classic keyboard over a qwerty one. I think its faster for SMS, and when I need to write something long, I would use the TS. (I've had a few Palms before so I m quite used to the block recognizer)
And totally agree with you on the looks: the P1i seems to try too hard at looking sophisticated and ended up looking cheap |

I would wait for the W960i than get a P1i. Walkman phones rock!
8GB of memory....wow.
I just hope that when SE does release the phone, it won't be bug-ridden like the P990i.
Let's go SE! |

The W960 will probably (like the W950) be missing the possibilities to read Word, Excel and Powerpoint files (QuickOffice). Probably SIP will also not be part of the phone.
What the W960 does have that the P1i is missing is the 'C' and the 'Back'-key on the front and it seems to have UIQ 3.1 so it will probably be better at one hand navigation than the p1i.. |

@aminoff:
I was also thinking about what sort of software it may come with, and you are right it probably wont come with any productivity software. But along as I can still use them, even if i have to pay for it , it wouldnt be too bad.
@gauravsali:
There are 2 leds on back of the W960i

@gauravsali:
No flash (thats xenon flash like in real cameras) but there are 2 LEDs.
Think of them more like a torch. You just turn them on or off, unlike xenon flash that discharges the instant you take the photo.
Look at the photo here:
http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]emplate=pip5&zone=pp&pid=10908
The LEDs are the 2 clearish round things above the lens.
