Hi guys;

I updated my 10 months old k750 to k790, meanwhile we bought my wife the w610. Here you can see my short review on their performance and peculiarities.

I have used Ericsson Ga628->Nokia 5110->Siemens C25->Ericsson T28w->Siemens S35-SE T300>Nokia 6630/6670->Samsung x300 (disaster!)->Nokia E61(more disaster!)->SE K750i. After using k750 for 10 months and get accustomed to the SE menu style, I couldn’t go to another manufacturer. I looked a lot for n95 but (no offense nokia guys) it was slow, big and not satisfactory for me. So I decided to have a little change while I would be waiting for the "true" next-gen device from SE to be commercialized (read: get cheaper in time...). I was torn between K550 and K790, here was the comparison in my mind against k750 before I bought my new phone.

K550
+ Superb dimensions and pocketability
+ increased physical dimensions of screen from k750
+ Better battery performance than k750
+ a2dp
+ New software (not major but at least a small change)
+ Sleek look
+ Some cybershot software advantages
+ Better mp3 player implementation (at least on walkman 1.0 level)
+ cheap

- Not the best cam after k750
- still the old resolution
- still the old fella…

K790

+ Better screen and resolution
+ 3.2mp cybershot
+ a2dp
+ new software (not major but at least a small change)
+ cybershot software advantages
+ better mp3 player implementation (at least on walkman 1.0 level)

- bulky
- not trendy
- pricy (against k550)

after some times spent, I thought, I should go for k790 so that while waiting for sofia to get cheaper at least I would have a better toy to enjoy. So I bought k790 and for my wife we bought w610 in the sense that; I persuaded her for SE software and hardware and she like the looks of grey w610.

Now here are my pro's and con's after using k790 and w610 over k750

K790

+ Cam is good on the whole!
+ Some nice improvements on menu (a little bit smarter)
+ Buttons on top (A,B) adds some value
+ screen not bad but not good as a samsung
+ nice flash
+ nice auto focus lamp

- bulky,bulky, bulky
- slow, slow, slow g** d*** this thing is very slow!!! grr slower than my k750 after latest software available for me (R1KG001-070418-CXC1250477)
- Cam is worse than k750 in details. Apparently, sensor is not capable of getting enough information on that little size (don’t flame me I have very good pictures with my K750, of course lower res but not with artifacts on details like k790)
- Sound from earpiece is low (lower than k750)
- Sound from speakers are not good (vibrations on high pitches)
- Sound while ringing is low
- No flash themes (ARRRRGH, I will never buy a phone buy just looking only Eldar's reviews!!, my mistake my grrr...)
- Didn't like the keypad and joystick. I don't now why just didn't like it
- screen is not bright,just dim
- Did I say it is slow?

W610

+ Fast, no no, not fast flying interface!
+ Screen is very good despite its resolution
+ Walkman interface is good (yeah I know it is a walkman phone )
+ A2DP
+ Flash theme (city beat is superb!)
+ Big fonts easy to read (Umm I'm young and don't have eye problems but k790 is harder on the eye, w610 is a definite go..)
+ Superb camera (considering it is a walkman and don't have night mode etc but...spot metering, auto focus mode, very bright flash)
+ Damn sexy and sleek
+ I though it would be bad but keypad is very good and nice looking and easy to press
+ in pitch black while my cybershot k790 can illuminate only up to 60-70cm effectively this small thing is going for up to 1metre (I didn't check maybe my k750 was also that good)
+ Enormous call ringing volume!!! this thing is mad!
+ Extremely good ear volume (while I'm pushing k790 to my ear to hear, with w610 I have to lower the earpiece volume!)
+ ultra bright screen, so vivid!

- no cybershot (come on who I am kidding...)
- Low res screen (although increased size, and fonts really helps.. definitely better than k750)
- Low light photos hurt!
- No camera protector/switch
- My wife has it!!!!

so this may come as a suprise but for a logical successor of k750 I would recommend w610/k550 (depends on cybershot or walkman branding). For me w610 can be tuned (maybe with newer firmware or maybe via hacks) for better photography where as k550 has no walkman (yes maybe you can update firmware on k550 but I love the walkman colors and buttons!) and no flash themes. I was very happy to buy k790 and if we hadn't buy w610, most probably I would be happy as thinking k790 as a successor of k750 but now I understand that if you are not on the urge of 320*240 screen and 3.2 megapixels camera definitely go for w610/k550 you would not regret it.

price paid k790 ~325€ with 512mb m2 on board
price paid w610 ~315€ with 1gb m2 on board

I would like to answer your questions if available

Greetings from Istanbul /Turkey

hey buddy, i don't know if it is just my thing or what, i am sooo confused when i read your review. It seems that you cannot make your mind for that, and also there are conflicts within your article ^___^. like saying K790 is good, but it is worse than K750 in details? ha? and you mention a lot more positive point on K550, yet you pick up K790? --___--.....

let me make it clearer I like my K790 but after seeing w610 it is not that good:) that's the point

for photo;
umm lets give a example, if you take a photo with k790, "on the whole" meaning light balance, focus accuracy, colors etc., it is (of course) better than k750 but if you go on %100 or %200 zoom for details, you will see lots of artifacts, missing details on k790 where as on k750 it is well controlled. As you said I was torn between k550 and k790 and I chosed k790 as I thought better screen and 3.2 cam is a better choice but on a whole package k550/w610 beats k790 with ease. I mean if you don't see k550 or w610 fine, k790 is a very good choice and you will be happy but when you see k550/w610 you'll regret buying k790 like me

maybe clearer

MADReaLJL;

yea maybe k790 is not that big but on the era of samsung ultra thin series or nokia 6300 etc. it is enermous. "w610" is so sleek

thank you I've updated it. go for w610 it is very good (I assume you will upgrade from w710?). I'll also buy a bluetooth headset for k790 (I'm torn between SE Stereo Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-DS970 and SOUTHWING SA505 STEREO Bluetooth headset)

I don't know if it helps but in Turkey w610 is
~315€ with 1gb m2 on board d:)

I find the K550's (and by extension, W610's) numeric keys overly tiny, almost to the point of unusable.

ajeetpv;

I'll check and inform you..

Hlcn Twst;

I thought the same also; but when you begin using it, it is fairly good; I press them with the side of my thumb, not the front; may be thats why it is very good for me

Spartan x;

if you are not on the urge, yes wait but I think as with the all first releases sofia will be pricy and if you want to wait to get it cheaper it may take time.. in mean time you can grab a w610 or k550 for some fun:)

I find my K800i's size to be a non-factor as well

On paper and in pictures, it looks big, but once you hold one in your hand, those pictures don't do it justice. It fits in my hand perfectly!

Tyildirim yes i could do that, but if i bought, say, a w610 i would have to pay the price for it and for the Sofia, so i wouldnt benefit much from its price drop.... What i mean is W610+Sofia with price cut = maybe more expensive than the Sofia when it comes out. So i prefer to keep the K750... after all it has all i want, for now.

@tyildirim:

Excellent review!!... just when my 2 options for a new phone are exactly those 2!!! =)

The only issue I have left is the flash...

I was aiming at k800 because Led-based flash photos i´ve seen, looked a little "dim"...

Can you comment about that?

I've yet to read a review that described the K790's UI as slow. Can you elaborate? The S710a was unbearably sluggish, too, and I don't want a repeat of that.
