We might see it as ridiculous but in a completely different culture such as India, this kind of behaviour is considered obscene and disprespectful.
Having said that i do believe the authorities in India did go a little OTT with this case.

that's not true, red... Actually it was blown out of proportion by the right wing people, and also it was live in front of an audience... Also it's election time, so cheap publicity and solidarity generation is required... otherwise there is far far more 'action' in indian movies...
