Hi all.

This has already been discredited as nothing more than a video running on the P990 and is a hoax apparently as discussed over @MY-Symbian.

The question why springs to mind!
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

why?
- full support of any codec (quicktime/realmedia/wmv/mp3/mp4/ etc etc.)
- endless possibilities condisering software (word/excel/100000 free games etc.)
- everything can be modified (shortcut buttons/menus/service)
- you can run services (ssh/apache/database)
- remote desktop (controll your windows pc on / with your mobile)
- stability (i havn't looked at the custom kernel, but usualy it's much more stable than symbian and windows(mobile))
- etc.

It's still a hoax though. A very unconvincing one at that. The Youtube video shows someone soldering a wire between two points on the P990's motherboard (supposedly the motherboard anyway, most likely some other spare piece of PCB scrap) and then voila! Ubuntu linux appears! Complete with GSM drivers no doubt!

I couldn't even get Ubuntu running on my IBM Thinkpad - I'll eat my phone if you can run it on a P990... SE have had enough trouble just getting UIQ to work on it!

//offtopic still

Quite often the boot CD fails to boot at all, and just stalls at the boot menu, or on a blank screen. I burnt a few different versions of the disk (on my desktop, using different media) and they were all quite unreliable on my TP, sometimes working, sometimes not. On the one occasion everything seemed fine, and I decided to proceed with an install to the hard drive, it supposedly created it's own partition and began to install. It then stalled at 22% (for hours) and when I rebooted, I found it had completely trashed the hard drive. Luckily, there was nothing too precious on there, and I needed to do something to fix my Windows install anyway, so I ended up just wiping it clean and starting again with XP.

When I researched it on the net, I found quite a few people had trouble with Thinkpads (of the T2x series like mine, anyway) and there were various contradictory fixes and workarounds, but as a Linux newbie looking for an easy introduction it was all enough to put me right off the idea!

true; that's a thinkpad issue.
i found out the following worked quite all right.
(make shure boot from cd/dvd is enabled in your bios)
place the disk, boot your system (proble the cd doesn't fireup)
once you hear the TP search for your cd/dvd restart your pc using the slide at top right of your keyboard.
it restarts and it should boot from cd/dvd (this is because your TP isn't fast enough to launch/read the cd/dvd, but once it's started up after 30sec. it does read/reconize the cd/dvd. if your reboot using the slide it does boot from cd)

make shure you have the following partitions made using the partmanager.
a main partition i prefer ext2 or ext3 (where you install linux) should be named "/" with a few gb i recommend 3/4gb at minimum
make a 2nd partition named swap (using swap format) it should be 2/3 times the size of your real ram; eg if you have 512mb ram, make a swap of 1gb or so.
optional make a /boot drive round 256mb, but it's not required.

you can still keep your windows drive to make a dual boot.
good luck

Thanks for the tips, I might try it again when I'm feeling braver. I'm actually thinking about replacing the TP's hard drive in a while anyway, so that might be a good time for a second attempt at an install.

It seems to run well on my desktop (the live CD that is) but I've got way too much stuff on there to risk another partioning disaster...

Erm, anyway, back to topic... aren't phones great?!

no ibm doesn't have any drivers or firmware updates to fix this issue
it's a hardware failure, quite difficult to fix the cd/dvd reading speed with software i think.

//ontopic

i'm realy dissapointed... soooo hope someone manages to hack SE bios.
so they can configure a kernel to boot the os
