When pointing your camera, divide the shot up into thirds horizontally and vetically, making a grid of 9 equal parts. Put the items of interest on the 4 intersection points NOT in the middle; I like to put the horizon line on the intersection between the top and middle \"thirds\".
The pictures just look more professional that way.
