K790a or K550i? |

I'm not yet convinced that a phone is a substitute for an Apple iPod. That said, suppose I were to replace my W810 with an iPod + Cybershot phone? For use in the US (850 MHz, 1900 MHz, EDGE), my only two choices are the K790a and K550i. Which to choose?
K790a's advantages
- 3.2 MP camera
- QVGA display
- unique physical design
- mature phone (in terms of FW updates)
- better for my ego
(owning a "7" phone vs. a "5")
K550i's advantages
- newer phone (a little more "future proof?")
- lower price ($100 cheaper than K790a, sim-free vs. sim-free)
- quad-band (someday I'll get a European holiday...)
- much more compact!
- more pleasing color choices (IMO)

I'd prefer the k550 over the k790. I like its design and as it is a new phone.

Well the whole point of a Cyber-shot phone is to have a nice camera. This is where the K790 completely trounces the K550. Plus the K790 still quite easily fits in any pocket. And you get a nicer keypad, too.

The K790a is just as future proof as the K550i. Both are JP-7 phones. The K790a just got another FW update to R1KC. I love the screen on mine. |

How does the K550i's camera compare to the W810's? The W810 is 2MP with AF and does quite well for a mobile phone. I assume The K550i would improve on this.
How is the K790 pocketable, given its brick-like size and lens cover "hump?" Do you wear cargo pants?
And what makes the K550i's keypad less "nice"?

I think the W810 still does better than a K550 at taking pictures because it has a bigger lens. The K550 has a lens cover, though.
Have you ever handled a K790 before? Unless you wear pants where you have to shoehorn your W810 to get it in, you really won't be bothered by the extra bulk.
The K790's keypad is simply top notch and I don't think the K550's small keys can compete.

I guess that's an objective opinion, there, korbindalls (Great user name, BTW. I love that movie. I can't wait to see it in Hi-Def!)

I'll go with the K790 no DOUBT ! If I were to choose between the K750 and the K550 . . . I would still go with the - K750, now . . why would I compare the K790 with a K550 (over-all comaprison)

Uh, who said anything about the K750?
I'm interested in K790a vs. K550i because they are both "Cybershot" phones, each with the US' GSM frequencies + EDGE. So they are somewhat comparable, save for the points in my first post in this thread.

Why would you have choosen the old K750 instead of a K550? Weird for me. For almost 2 years ago I had a K750 (bought it the day it came out, 2005-05-23) and for some weeks ago I bought the K550. (I had a M600i between these phones also).
The K550 feels much more "up-to-date" than the old K750. Better screen, thinner design, better UI and so on. The features is almost the same, except for some difference, to the K550 advantage. (like Track-ID, better Bluetooth etc).
But back to the thread-creators choice. I would have said it depends which one you choose. The difference in cameras between the K790 and the K550 is rather big, especially that the K550 lacks xenon-flash. But the camera on the K790 isnīt good enough for me, so I saved some money, did get a slimmer and newer phone for less money, and bought the K550.
Hope this helps you.
Would you like to see some sample pictures, just search for the "K550 picture-thread", where I have posted some pictures.
A long answer - but hopefully helpfull.
Cheers! |

@bear - Well, I quite agree with you dude . . . but for my the K750 has been one of 's BEST ever manufactured fone, comparable STILL with the latest to date I really liked the contour of the fone, keypads, joystick and the cam's 'cover' at the back (specially if to compare with the 'round-and-round . . . you go' of the W800's . . . I will still GET the K750 against that of the K550 . . . but as per thread's title . . . still the K790 here !
