Hey Guys,
I bought a phone from an ebay 'powerseller' last November and then sold it to one of the members on here in December as i no longer wanted it.
However, yesterday he pm'd me to say the phone now appears to be blocked as he can't use it no matter what sim card he tries in it
Does this mean it is 100% stolen or can there be any other reasons for it becoming blocked ? Perhaps any of you guys who are in the mobile phone trade could provide an accurate answer as i'm keen to learn if there can be more than one reason for it to become blocked?
Many thanks.

It might have been reported stolen to claim on insurance.

Yep an insurance claim would make the handset useless.

but you should be using the handset shortly being reported (e.g within 24hours) - it might be the networks decided to block it now after months |

Hi Topscooby
I would contact the seller and ask what has happened as if this is what has happened and this is the case he is guilty of commiting insurance fraud and both the insurance company and the Police will prosecute him.

You shouldn't really be contacting after a year.. if people come back to me after 4 months and say something's gone wrong with the phone then anything could've happened.
If it was his contract phone from new then it's wise but he could come back and say sorry I don't know what's happened, it's not my problem...

@top - Just want to ask what an Ebay 'POWERSELLER' is If it describes a TRUSTED seller . . . then I guess the problem will NOW be with that other member here . . . (one you SOLD it to . . .).

What Topscooby neglected to mention was that he sold the phone to me and has now basically washed his hands of the whole situation leaving me with a phone to the value of £200+ that is basically useless.
Maybe it is not his fault the phone has been blocked but he was the original buyer and I bought it off him in good faith.
I have had this happen to me a few times when buying phones on Ebay and have always had the good grace to refund the person who bought it off me and then sort the problem myself.
Apparently though, topscooby cannot take the phone back and refund my money as he would then be handling goods involved in an insurance fraud.

Yes there are other ways phones can be blacklisted!!!!!
This has happened to me many many times, and NOT because someone reported the intended phone stolen/lost.
On 3 occasions the incorrect IMEI number had been quoted to the provider, hence me as the innocent party gets a barred phone. Think about it, an IMEI number has 15 digits, get one wrong and ANYONES phone can be barred. Food for thought I think?
Before anyone says well the phone has to be under your name to be reported lost/stolen, then the answer is, no it does not. This by the way is the worst way of getting a legitimate phone un barred, as proving the phone belongs to you is very hard! Especially if you do not have a receipt for the phone.
On 2 occasions after purchasing phones originally on the Orange contract network, because the original owner did not tell Orange the phone was to be transferred to PAYG. The original owner had upgraded which in turn makes Orange still the legal owner, so hence they stopped the phone because the original contract never finished.
Regarding any phone purchased form E-Bay, ALWAYS keep hold of the phone for at least a month or more before selling on, that will give the provider enough time to stop the phone if it's reported lost/stolen. Anyone who want's to make a quick sale, should only buy from known sources.
A little tip for those who are not aware, why not check out if the phone has been reported as I do. Ask for the IMEI number from the seller, and use the Checkmend service.
Send a Text to 84025: All you put in the text is the words Check then leave a space, and the IMEI number, so it looks like this......
Check 123456789012345
Costs about £3, and usually done within a few minutes. |
