I use usenext, i'd say it is limewire where the sky is the limit ( speed wise ) or rather, how fast your connection will let you go. I download a 1.1 MB a second, which is pretty nice. Go to usenext.com and sign up for a 14 day trial, it costs 70p

Then surely you have something better to offer to the thread than that?

Well...

Newsgroups were originally for people to exchange opinions and help about problems they had, doubts, etc... But since they have the ability to hold attachments, people started to use them to share files.

Not much to explain other than that...

PS-Google Groups is based on existing newsgroups in other places.

I guess so... because it seems that the messages are replicated to several servers according to this:

USENET: (USEr NETwork) is a global, distributed Internet discussion system that evolved from a general purpose UUCP network of the same name. It was conceived by Duke University graduate students Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis in 1979. Users read and post e-mail-like messages (called "articles") to a number of distributed newsgroups, categories that resemble bulletin board systems in most respects. The medium is distributed among a large number of servers, which store and forward messages to one another. Individual users download and post messages to a single server, usually operated by their ISP or university, and the servers exchange the messages between each other.

FTP is the acronym for File Transfer Protocol...
Just a different way to download files... old tech too. As old as HTTP.
The first MP3 files i downloaded came from FTP servers. From www.oth.net search engine (which i've just checked it still exists after almost 10 years).
Ûsually those site have "ratio" requirements like upload 3 musics to download 1, or something llike that

So there's nothing new about these technologies, it's just a trend...
