A wise question indeed :) To be honest with you, I don't know the answer :( but (there is always a but) what I am concerned and in my case only, windows seem to have the 'upper hand'. Then again this does not mean that I 'love' Microsoft (not to mention the 'nr. 1' man.

@bluechips :) Trust me on this one buddy, I really wished I could go 'back to the mountains' and stay there not to bother you ever again, unfortunately neighter my wife nor kids not to mention my work will allow me to do what you suggested I so much would love to do. With a bit of help from above I might just get me a small vacation house close to 'God's window' mountain range. I will send you the gps coordinates from my cell if you want to check it on google earth. Unfortunately that won't happen anytime soon :( which means that everytime I get bored and have a few free seconds, I will work on your nerves on this forum - bare with me on this one -

@nokiamaniax

I'm using Nokia as an example of S60 usage since obviously, they are the most successful in S60 market. Why SE didn't use S60 is probably because they see flaws in it. It might be worth more for R&D while they could just implement everything that's needed for a lower R&D.

As for ease of use, people who just began using mobile phones wouldn't begin thinking of using any smartphone-based. Some of us are familiar with these types of phones and ofcourse you can say that it's ease to use. But think when compared to regular phones. Would S60 work as efficiently as 6230(for example) for beginners?

Mobile manufacturers aren't necessarily targeting existing users. As a matter of fact, even SE announced before that they want to emphasize on new users which is their strong point of why they didn't decide to use S60 as their platform(again, haven't included the virus stuff).

I'm not making a fight, but just wanted to broaden the perspective. That's all.

GREAT perspective and very close to the matter of fact.

> Some points I'd like to clear up.
1) THERE is the ability to re-encode S60 applications (I think its pre 3rd edition though) to UIQ3 in order to run on those devices.

2) S60 is not inferior nor superiour - however I'd wager the latter because its had a longer life of tweaks & features added and modified and tested in real world to run out the bugs. Futhermore its VERY fast lately. I think the MAIN reason why SE did NOT go with S60 is because of 2 major things. Expenses & costs.

The Cost of licensing Symbian OS is one thing even though they have a share on the board. its an expense to shell out more for S60 to Nokia - something that LG, Samsung and a few others do but not TOO successfully and in limited revisions/devices. Furthermore, Nokia has a much better foothold in the market for target marketed devices - Ngage/QD, N93, upcoming N95 and previously the 6260. All of those had their niche target market with mass appeal > that is a juggernaut that SE would be stupid to fight in from a non established base. Later this year into next I'm sure we'll see different markets targeted by SE's use of UIQ3.

From the announcement of UIQ3.0, they did say that the new UIQ3.0 are able to be modified close to S60 platform(I'm probably thinking of usage AND appearance) which might be better than the use of Symbian S60 OS.

And I do agree with you Prom1. Its like jumping into a battlefield that is still raging. Best example is iPhone who's destine depends on SE, Motorola, and Nokia of whether they would show some mercy or not. SE wouldn't dare jump to S60 fields while they already have the grasp on UIQ Technology.

All I'm hoping for is the new UIQ to be efficient and safe to use. I don't want like windows where its a lot of good stuff, but the blue screens, freezes, errors that drive people nuts, and once again, VIRUS.

@ bo-sagoor I better let someone als answer this one. Needles to say my oldish N70 gives the P990i a run for its money if it comes to memory management/availability/usage

The successor to the P990/M600i (Elena?) is quite brilliant.
