PPC devices even at higher CPU speeds in real life do not out perform Symbian devices by as much as you'd expect. No PPC device has the video capture (e.g. N95) or playback quality (e.g. SE M600) of Symbian devices from my experience.

As far as I know, PPC devices don't have a very good battery life either. I've played around with an HP IPAQ and never could get to the end of the day.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

i'll be a little disappointed if the phone was released without a camera cover. It was a problem with the w810 having a scratched screen

After what seems like hours, I finally got to the end of this thread.

I can't bear to look at the other one and I'm still not clear on couple of important points.

1; Is this any sort of successor to the p990 - i.e. is it more fully featured and is there now any point in upgrading to a P990?

2; If it is not, is there likely to be a successor to the P990 any time soon?

it's not as simple as you make it... and face it most of the apps that you run on your smartphone are more ram intense then processing power based... it's not like you're encoding videos or your phone on a regular basis

A slower processor with plenty of ram beats a fast processor crippled by too little ram.....

A faster processor is only crippled when there is not enough RAM in which case you get a "Memory Full" since there is no RAM swapping to disk. As long as it is not in "memory full" situation, a faster processor still outperform a slower one.

mib1800, agreed, but in the p700 vs n95 case the processor is not 2 times more powerfull AFAIK...

It is about 1.3 times more by processor speed but taking into account better graphic processor of N95 it may be more. With the current RAM level of N95 only under a few occasion (like surfing to huge web page and having Gallery open at same time) then you may hit memory full. So 80-90% of the time you can use it to full speed potential.

The P700 advantage is that you never have to worry about "memory full" again. But under most normal usage scenario, it will most likely to perform slower than N95 esp. in multimedia intensive ops like UI, video playback or surfing the web.

Like I say, if SE priced p700 at least 30-40% lower than N95, it would make an attractive buy for someone who needs a smartphone. I may even trade in my Atom for this.

re: CPU speed & graphics etc

it is odd that downloaded videos from www.bbc.co.uk run more smoothly and look better quality on my M600 then on my N95...perhaps the screen resolution and colour density also has an impact on the end user experience. As usual theory and real life never seem as consistent as they should be...

To mib1800:

how can you tell N95's graphics processor was better than P700 or the current UIQ phones whist we don't know the clock speed of these chipsets? AFAIK UIQ's transition effects was more graphics hungry than N95's transition effects and both the phone chips were not having it's own RAM so how can it become better than UIQ 3s?

no idea. I am just basing it on peter kay's thread which says the p700 has the same processor speed and lite version of graphic processors. From Jbenchmark Pro (jbenchmark.com), N95 has a benchmark result of 400+ whereas m600/p990 is about 220. This should give some indication (but not absolute) of the performance difference.

Yes the n95 has a more powerful processor and graphics ability than the p700 or so it seems but the question is, is this a good idea?

But do we really want less battery power and a more expensive device to play the ngage gaming deck.

Hi all,

Well as the processor and graphics chip are the same as in current UIQ3 devices it does make a lot of difference the first being something that so many of you seem to want the ability of to be able to record @ 640x480 30fps VGA video as this is dependant on the graphics chip and the reason the UIQ3 devices don't is the fact they have the lite version of this chip.

I find Jah's comment of video looking better on the M600 quite strange as both my now sold N93 and now E61 are definitely much better than the M600 i had. But as i am about to purchase a UIQ3 device shortly I will test them head to head with the E61 just to see what results it produces.

Marc

are you running the latest unbranded N95 or an original version, branded one?

I've just done a comparison of M600 vs N95 on the BBC site, after restarting both phones, and find the N95 to be quicker and smoother. I do have a 2gb memory card with about 200mb free though I'm not sure if thats being used or internal memory but...

first.... are processors always running at top speed? That doesn't seem to make sense... like a pc it runs faster as more resources/processing power is needed....

second you're excluding UI design... take the k790a for example it's gallery destroys my n95 in start up and image population.
surfing the web is not a heavy processor based application.....ram is more important for web surfing....

@Dogmann

sorry to cause a mild panic, the video playback in general of the N95 is far superior to the M600. I was just surpised there was such little difference when I was watching videos from the BBC web site. Now that I have thought about it a bit - its a encoding issue not a rendering/playback issue

@Masseur, just tried again as I upgarded the FW a few days ago. You are right the playback is better. But as stated above, video in general is superb on the N95 and the video recoding means you really don't need a camcorder anymore

Sensibility resumed....

You cannot compare this way. K790 gallery is much more simplistic than the N95 gallery in outlook and effect. Try installing RescoViewer (a simplistic photo viewer like those in SE) and I am pretty sure N95 beats the K790 in speed. btw: in the new firmware the N95 gallery is faster and smoother without lag.

Surfing the web IS very processor intensive with wifi/downloading and the display of images and running of scripts. You can even feel the battery becoming hot.
