Had my w850i for a little while after changing from my w810i. and the camera is SO different. Whilst the interface of the camera is more like the K800i and despite it being 2mp like the w810 the quality is aweful.
Look at the two pics below. Both taken at the exact same time with the phones side by side. [Every picture I take with my w850 is very dark.] Both have the same settings. I even took the picture of the w810 by pressing the capture button quickly so no autofocus. Ive checked the lens on the w850 and it appears to be fine. Its annoying as I have to have the flash on when taking all pictures (unless its sunny).

W810:

W850:

(its dark and green tinted!!)

Picture properties:

Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening?
The pics other people have taken with their w850 seem alot better!

It's probably a smaller and possibly cheaper lens in the W850 that takes fairly good photos in plenty of natural light (which is probably what the other pictures you've seen were taken in) but performs worse in artificial light than the W810i.

SE seem to be doing more 'specialised' devices rather than 'jack of all trades' phones like the W800/W810i were, thus you're getting more dedicated walkman phones like the W850i with an inferior camera, and the K800i Cypbershot phones with the superior camera but inferior MP3 player. Shame, I like the 'all-rounder' devices!

Have you tried K800i the Cyber-shot phone? It has great camera capabilities, but never compare the music output with Walkman series. So, enjoy whichever phone you have.

Look at the exposure times and notice one is 1/15 and the other 1/20 this makes a difference and can go someway to explain the darkness of the photo.

Can not compare to pics when they have different settings you see!

W850 has no af, so no reason to compare it to w810 imo

Why no af in w850, any official statement? If it would be a low end or mid range fone, ok, but in a w810 succesor...

I agree, it makes no sense to have a no AF camera in a high-end phone. If they had put a 2MP AF module in the w850 it would have been no competition for the K800 with its 3.2MP module and xenon flash, so there was nothing to worry about. No AF for the w850 could be one of the dumbest things has done. This is why I never even considered the phone, camera is crucial for me, isn't.

yes i notices the exposure time but that wouldntve made such a big difference. a slight one would be expected.
se are being stupid. the w850i is being marketed as better than the w810i. If you go into a shop they will say it is the next one up.
i hope they can better this with the next firmware.

the camera is appauling!
i love this phone otherwise!
