not really.
what percentage of the worlds population is chinese?
if we go along the idea that the worlds population is give or take 60billion and according to cia.gov the population for china in 2006 in a shade over 1.3billion. so by my maths i make that one in every 45 people is chinese.
you dont wanna be annoying them do you!

cia.gov puts the world population at Approx 6.5 Billion, not 60 Billion.
That makes the chinese 1 in approx 6.5 or round up or down as you please.

what a lack of business and cultural awareness...yes it is because of the chinese market.
If i'm not worng and please correct me if that's the case, i think the number 4 in chinese sounds awfully like death or something like that and therefore is a number to avoid.
Im sorry but it is true more than one in every 6 people in the world is chinese. Even if the number of people in china who can afford a mobile phone is not more than one billion, the market is still hugely influential for most of the manufacturers to piss off the chinese by seeming to lack cultural awareness...
Just as a side note, the biggest mobile company by number of subscribers is China telecom...if that doesn't prove that the chinese market is important, then i don't know what will... |

@butterguy
Exactly. 4 and death in Chinese are near identical in sound, so that's why it's so unlucky.
And it's such an easy thing to avoid anyway; just change the model numbers. I don't see what the big fuss is.

I have a CHINESE-blood . . . now I know why there's never a 4 in almost any brand of merchandise sold out in the market . . . I don't even see a 4 -series Bimmer and perhaps even a - 6 one
The number - 8 is LUCKY in Chinese . .. now I know why the 8-series model fones of Nokia are soooooooo expensive during it's INITIAL release, specially those metal-plated: 8850, 8855, 8890, 8800 (not the 8210 and 8250 though . . . .)

@shali - For all I KNOW of dude . . . the #8 is the LUCKY one in - Chinese . . . that's why the MOST saleable CAR PLATE at my end usually are those with number ending in TRIPLE: 8 or 7 . . . say like: XXX 888 or XXX 777. Though it has an extra US$ 300-400 charge . . . when I was looking for one . . . the ONLY remaining that I have to choose on are either: 666 or 999 . . . why the hell should I be gettin' the - 666 ! Car plates at my end can be personalized too . . . 3-letters for your names initials (2nd one is your maiden name).
Yup, and I agree that the world's population is - 6B and NOT - 60B !
This case can be connected with that on the ELEVATORs too . . . there's NO 13th FLOOR on it . . . UNLESS, if the building has only - 12 FLOORS and the numbering will END at the . . . 12th floor !

Does nokia made on its own this decision or was it forced by anyone?

@boba
Well Nokia would have made a conscious decision to do this. And as I said, it's not very hard to implement. There's no harm done either, so it's just very very simple marketing.
