Sony Ericsson, the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker by shipments, plans to enter the highly competitive South Korean mobile phone market in 2007.
"Sony Ericsson is in talks with Korean mobile carriers about installing the WiFi wireless Internet platform on its phones to be launched in Korea," said a spokesman for SK Telecom, Korea's leading mobile carrier by subscribers.
Sony Ericsson may launch high-end phones in Korea in the second half of 2007, when HSDPA is commercialized, the spokesman said.
SK Telecom hasn't yet decided whether to buy mobile phones from Sony Ericsson, he said.
Officials at Sony Ericsson couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
South Korean manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics dominate the domestic handset market. In South Korea, around 40 million people out of a population of 48 million carry at least one mobile phone.
Motorola, the world's second-largest handset maker, is the sole foreign vendor in Korea, with a market share of about 10%, according to Shinyoung Securities analyst Seung Woo Lee.

errrrrr with what exactly ,last time i checked they were kind of lacking or slacking in all kinds of innovative developments-well unless they specifically target the lower-end of the market |

hehe well said boba.
i think SE will be going after 2007, and with a small attack on its home market everything is possible. you never know when a model becomes a hudge hype. and i think every extra phone sold for SE is a step in the right direction.

Very risky. Motorola has had some, very, limited success. Nokia had none at all and pulled out.. Let them try, but without wasting too much money if things don't work.

the fact that nokia failed is alarming. but then again if motorola can grap some marketshare i'm sure SE can 2.
maby with an emotinal design, who knows what hype they can create.

I think SE is going to chase market share in 2007, this being a prime example.

But one thing SE might do is launch Japanese developed handsets in Korea, it is possible.
I don't want a signature anymore. |

Everyone would agree that the Korean market might be a tough nut to crack but what does have on its side is some great brands such as Walkman and Cyber-shot and a more people friendly feel - thanks to the current advertising campaign.
LG and Samsung to me come across as a bit boring and staid compared to other brands.
This would also be a good platform for to showcase HSDPA and wi-fi enabled devices.
