Accessing Firmware Information

To find out which firmware revision your phone currently has installed, select Menu > Settings > General > Update service > Software version. For more detailed software versioning information, perform the following:

>*<<*<*

Where < and > represents pushing the joystick left and right respectively.

Sony Ericsson Update Service

The firmware of the W850/W830 can be upgraded either over the air by selecting Settings / Update Service / Search for update or via the more traditional (and potentially cheaper) method of the Sony Ericsson Update Service. In order to use SEUS you will need to have internet access (preferably Broadband) and attach your phone to your PC via the supplied USB cable.

Note that the required firmware update drivers are present in the following directory after installing SEUS:

C:/Program Files/Sony Ericsson/Update Service/drivers

If you run into problems, you may wish to download and install Sun's Java Runtime Environment separately.

If the firmware update fails part way through, retry the SEUS. If the update consistently fails you will need to perform a Master Reset on your phone. It is likely that you will be required to perform a Reset All - a settings reset is unlikely to do the job. It is recommended to use a tool such as MyPhoneExplorer to create a backup of the data on your phone before performing a Master Reset. Note that you will still lose any games, themes or ringtones present in your phone's memory.

SEUS will currently install the following firmware revisions for UK phone brands:

W850
Unbranded UK (CDA102677/95) - R1ED001
O2 UK (CDA102677/58) - R1ED001
Vodafone UK (CDA102677/51) - R1ED001
Orange UK (CDA102677/36) - R1ED001
3 UK (UNKNOWN) - R1ED001
T-Mobile (CDA102677/26) - R1ED001

Third Party Update Services

Third party firmware updates are available from Wotan Server. The use of third party solutions will theoretically void your warranty (although in practice the phone vendor is unlikely to notice) so should only be used in preference to SEUS for debranding purposes or updating a problematic phone locked out of SEUS by the service provider.

Has anyone noticed a problem with the slider not finishing a call when closing it, it only happens some times.

I don't think that the slide is suppose to end calls. I think that is a oversight by in my opinion

No bugs? That's baloney.

Occasionally, track play stops when you press the return button for a couple seconds while browsing around the phone and want to get to the main menu.

After browsing videos, then jumping onto the internet, the background occasionally takes the form of a frame from the last video.

After setting the "grouped" theme, the Grouped bubbly background becomes the preview for the stock video "Time", which is just a watch with the hands running.

And... WORST OF ALL. Walkman 2.0 apparently STILL does not support AAC tags, though I have heard that some people say it does.

I used foobar2000 to do the tags, iTunes to verify and even test re-tagging. Still, nothing.

On my W850, the o2 Goodbye Welcome screen stays on for about 30secs before going off. I suppose it just takes a while to switch off. Its better than the new generation of Nokia phones where it takes ages to switch on! Now that would be a problem!

SE never intended to let the phone end calls when closing the slide. The simple reason being that they assumed many people will dial the number then close the slide so it makes the phone more comfortable to hold while speaking to someone. There is an option for "Open to answer" so maybe they can add another one saying "Drop when closed" (or words to that effect) in a future firmware upgrade.

Apart from that, I have not noticed any other "problems."

Temporal_Dragan:

You might want to add this to your OP. O2 UK's CDA is CDA102677/58

Oh man. Embarassing. I thought I had tried this before, but hadn't.
My file extensions were all mp4 or aac. I avoided m4a for some stupid reason... Just tried it (both itunes and foobar encoded) and it works. So, so, so, dumb...

.:THANKS:.

Other errror still holds though. When I hold the return to menu button while in Walkman mode, music will stop sometimes.
