There are applications - readers\\viewers for both extensions you mentioned, but they're NOT for SE phones. They are only for siemens mobile phones. They're called pdfreader.jar and docreader.jar, but first they have to be adapted for SE phones. So if anyone knows how to adapt them, post a reply.

Thanks

There are a few java ebook reader applications out there (e.g. ReadManiac, TequilacatReader) which can run in SE phones (and basically all phones that run java programs). These readers usually have some plugins which convert common document files (.doc, .pdf) to the respective ebook format (probably, .txt). Yes, you have to do conversion before sending the files to the phone and many a times, graphics, pictures will not be converted. I have been using TequilaCat Reader and find it pretty handy. I finished quite a number of novels on my w800 .

I believe there's a java program called Fone Folio (search getjar.com) which can enable your phone to read microsoft word, powerpoint, excel files. But I believe the way they do it is to store the respective documents to a remote server and the server does the conversion and send them to the phone via wireless internet. I think this is an expensive way to do it but they do convert graphics and such.

@slugworth: You're right, and for the .doc and .xls you save both of them as html documents and them send to your phone, you'll be able to see them like a saved web pages. [addsig]

But the question is, if there is any application pdf or doc document reader to read these file without conversion. Somewhere in some situations we'll not be able to convert the files.

The samsung Picsel viewer in the D600 and others is a good implementation of a pdf/office viewer on java platform, and i'm sure Picsel Inc. can release a generic j2me version which should work on all phones.

I wonder what's keeping them from doing so.

There is a free pdf viewer for Palm, palmpdf, based on Xpdf which is also free. Maybe this could be ported to SE/j2me by someone with the right skills and experience. It reads unconverted pdf files.

so to confirm;

i can save a file as .txt, import it via usb to a SEw700i phone, and view it?

how large can the files be (im looking for minimum 20 000 charachters-ish) ?

is there a specific location/folder where they need to be stored?

what is the process for viewing the files, ie what program in the phone do i use, or do i need to download something?

*is there anyone who has actually sucessfully done this on a w700i, and can anyone confirm maximum size of .txt files?

thanks!

Probably because they are scared people will steal the software, or get it illegally.

At least when it's implemented they are making money.

But seriously... how hard can it be?
