Just an FYI for the US Market...

I just ordered my P990i from http://www.myworldphone.com for $899!!

I literally got a UPS tracking # within 60 minutes of ordering, 2nd day air.

They have great service, I bought a Moto Slvr from them a few months back and shipped that quickly as well...

@ outsidah -- Where did you see $835? That's a really good price.

@ cardpunk -- Thanks for the update! MobilePlanet still doesn't have stock, so I may cancel with them and order from www.myworldphone.com. So their service is pretty good?

Has anyone else ever ordered from this company?

Their service is great. They have a Live Help Chat on their website.

The chat has been very helpful, they have been keeping me up to date on the P990 progress.

I ordered today (first time it showed up on their site).

I have a Tracking # through UPS which is already trackable (will be here thursday)...

I'll post back pictures when I get the phone, or if there are any issues...

That's great, I hope you enjoy it. Do you travel to Europe often? Honestly, that seems like the only reason to buy this device now. If your main usage will be in the States then it seems like you're paying for a lot more than you are able to use. But, if you like the phone and can afford it that is all that really matters I guess.

For me, I will wait for a quad-band or North American version that also supports HSDPA on 850 and/or 1900. We have HSDPA in Boston now so I won't buy a device that I can not use to its fullest.

Here comes the rant, so anyone who doesn't care can stop reading now.

I don't understand why HTC and Nokia can make a quadband GSM/triband UMTS/HSDPA device and SE can't. I don't buy the whole market size or consumer sophistication argument. All the major US carriers carry the Wizard/Apache phones which are more complicated to use than the P series. I think SE marketing is just lazy and not doing a good job marketing to US carriers. Any serious marketing effort to sell a phone that is as powerful as the HTC PPCs but easier to use should work. I think that they are just used to dealing with European carriers that they already know and have established relationships with. I'm sure that the P series phones practically sell themselves to the European carriers, whereas it would take much more legwork to make US carriers familiar with these phones.

If there are any SE marketing people out there tell me whether I am right or not.

Well I just placed an order from them for an overnight delivery. So hopefully I will get mine tomorrow (Thursday) too! Thanks for the tip. Crazy MobilePlanet and Expansys won't have stock for 9 days! Ridiculous! I hope all will go smoothly with this order...

Can someone explain the drawbacks of using my P990i in the US?

Slower connection? less coverage? Not sure I fully understand...

I assume its just the non 3G support rolled out through the entire country?

P990i supports the EU 3G frequency band only - 2100MHz. Cingular (the only US carrier with 3G GSM service so far) has only deployed in very limited markets and uses 850 or 1900MHz.

T-Mobile is likely to do the same as they deploy in 2007 (or so they promise).

I don't even think this phone has EDGE.

So you have a nice but very expensive 1900MHz only, GPRS phone with WLAN.

As the other guy said - buying something without quadband GSM and triband 3G is not sensible.

Ahh ok, yeah it doesnt have that 850 band...

I have a P900 now that I think is only Tri-band as well.

If I'm happy now with the P900 (and slow GPRS) do you think I'll be happy with the P990 until 2007?

The importance of quad band GSM typically depends on your carrier. I have T-Mobile and have a P910i (tri band) and I have also had a RAZR (quad band). In all of my travels, I have never experienced a time when the quad band phone had service and the tri band P910 didn't. Most everywhere with T-Mobile is 1900 mhz, and only very rural areas use the extra 850 mhz. So it doesn't do much good to have quad band.

The other possible drawback is that the P990 doesn't have EDGE. This would be a nice feature to have since most US carriers support this function. But I have never had a phone with EDGE and I seem to have gotten by so far.

In the US, Cingular has a 3G network on the 1900 mhz band I believe. T-Mobile has no 3G network yet. They might roll one out in 2007, and it could be 1900 mhz or 2100 mhz. They may also skip this and offer something along the lines of 3.5G or 4G (I'm not sure what it's called). So most 3G phones you buy now likely won't work (such as P990).

The P990 does have WIFI though; and where I live, I will be able to get WIFI coverage practically everywhere. This is the main reason I am getting this phone over the M600.

I am buying the phone for all the other features it has besides the 3G (I wouldn't even be able to use that right now with T-Mobile anyway). The US has some catching up to do. But until then, I will enjoy the WIFI, fantastic 2MP camera, nicer backlit keyboard, better flip-closed implementation, push e-mail, great looking user-interface, etc. that the P990 has to offer over the P910. It is a lot of money, but I have decided that it is the right decision for me.

I hope this helps, and I apologize if any of my information is incorrect.

By the way, I have my tracking number too! Can't wait until tomorrow! The wait is almost over.

Yeah all good points, which is why I'll probably like my P990.

One last question... T-mobile or Cingular (I'm currently on T-mobile).

Where will I see the most benefit? Will I see anything great by switching to Cingular?

No, Cingular would actually be worse for you. Cingular uses more of the 850 mhz band, which the P990 does not support, so you would have less coverage with them. T-Mobile primarily uses the 1900 mhz band, with just a little 850 mhz, so you'll have better coverage with them. Stick with T-Mobile.

Why wouldn't be able to use it with T-Mobile?
