Major N80 Rant! |

I have had the N80 now for THREE weeks now, and I have to say that it is the biggest heap of junk that Nokia have ever made!
My list of problems:
- Poor battery life - the phone will last 18 hours a day before needing to be charged, which is totally unacceptable for a business smartphone!
- Loose slider - I find it very hard to swallow that Nokia would produce a premium slider phone that has a inferior slider to the 6280. It's absolutely ridiculous! The phone will be in my pocket and when I get it out, the slider is hanging half open!
- Low Memory - I'll have 2 or 3 applications open and the phone reports low memory. If the Nseries phones are supposed to be mobile computers, then with memory performance such as this, I'd be better off with my son's Vtech computer!
- Software Glitches - There seems to be so many different problems with the software on the N80. Random soft reboots, freezing, not installing applications that I know are supposed to work. Even something as simple as having the first name and surname of a text message recipient in the right order seems to be beyond it!
There are other minor issues that are happening with the phone, such it randomly choosing to 'lose' the memory card, flicking screen, answering my calls on speakerphone automatically...
I work in a phone shop and 4 of my colleagues have the N80... with the SAME problems, so I know that it's not just me. All of them are planning to return/get rid of the handset because of the numerous issues. The phones are also being returned to the shop at the rate of 3 a week!
The situation is so bad that my manager is talking customers OUT of getting the phone!
Also someone within Nokia can't do their job when it comes to information about the N80:
Nokia states that the phone is an XpressMusic device (http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4164063) - IT'S NOT!;
Nokia states that the phone has a 860mAh battery - IT DOES NOT AND THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS!;
Nokia states that the N80 is compatible with the HS-6 display headset - NO IT'S NOT AND IT COST ME £30 TO FIND OUT!!!
I had a Sony Ericsson phone for 3 years and it did exactly what it said on the tin; if there are any issues with the phone, SE keep customers informed and release firmware updates... better still, end users can change the firmware themselves!
Nokia's take on this seems to be 'we know nothing and we can't hear you'.
The N80's MRP is £429.99. For the cost of the phone, I expect damn near perfection, not to be the alpha tester of sub-standard handset!
Nokia are the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturers. GET YOUR DAMN ACT TOGETHER AND SORT OUT THE ISSUES... NOW!!!
There are an army of N80 lovers out there who would agree with me in saying that the N80 is probably the best handset in the market on paper, but all that is nothing if we are frustrated in actually using the handset.
NOKIA N80 WISHLIST:
Auto keylock when the slider is closed or after a period;
Allow customisation of the Active Standby screen (like the 6820!);
Text Message sender name to be in the RIGHT ORDER (First Name Surname);
Built-in recurrent alarm
MORE MEMORY!!!!!!!!;
Album Art in the Music Player;
Separate Images and Videos in the Gallery (like the 3250!)
Better synchronisation with Outlook (all fields, contact groups and distribution lists);
Full Screen Caller ID;
Full screen wallpaper;
More robust slider;
A MUCH, MUCH, MUCH BIGGER CAPACITY BATTERY!!!

 t610 > k700i > p800 > p900 > p910 > k750i > I-mate Jam > Blokia 6681 > HTC Prophet > HTC Wizard & Nokia N73 > E71 > BB 9000 > HTC Desire > Samsung Galaxy S > Samsung Galaxy S II & the Motorola Xoom <br /> Still Shiny but not so n |

Mobile-review tested N80 for two months and almost warned for it. You maybe will never more see a smart phone after a N80. The battery is one hour capacity in 3g region. The situation is the same as in Motorola phones of ten years ago: impossible to use in business. Poor batteries poor nokia.

Indeed, n80 is a very weak fone, but nokia is able to allowe itself to launch some crap devices, they dont care of a bit lost imo, there now plenty other symbians for the customers

Well I bought an N80 11 weeks ago (after 4 years of SE phones) and I think it's the best phone I've ever owned. To begin with I have to agree about the battery life but most people have plenty of oppertunity to charge phones during thier day if they use it intensively. Many of the problems tou have had with the phone indicate that you are using the first firmware release (memory, album art, losing the memory card etc.)
As regards the wishlist then sure there are some things that don't come installed on the phone but that is the point of symbian phones to let you choose what features you want without Nokia (or SE) cluttering up your memory.
Autokeylock - Have it on my N80
Customisation of standby screen - Menu- Tools-Settings-Phone-Standby
mode-active standby apps
Text sender name- firmware update available
Reccurent alarm- Have it on my N80
More memory - it's never enough but everyone with updated firmware has reported that the out of memory issues have all but dissappeared.(Even with original firmware you have 3-4 mb more than than those guys on the symbian forum say they have on the p990 at boot).
Album art - said to be fixed on the latest firmware but I can't confirm( haven't had time to upgrade)
Seperate images and video - I agree it would be better but it's honestly never bothered me.If you have a lot of files it might be better to acsess them through the file manager where they are grouped in such a way.
Full screen wallpaper- I've never had this on any phone but its really not so hard to make a simple theme screen which would be fullscreen
Sorry about your slider but mine is still perfect after several months of heavy use.
I think all advanced phones are full of glitches these days due to pressure to get the phone out before the thing becomes old hat but my SE phones have all had worse firmware problems than my N80. Maybe I just got lucky with my example but I wouldn't swap this for a P990!

@ shug
I'm running:
V3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)
Which is the latest firmware to date that know of... What's yours?
Plus, I'm not talking about the names in the Contacts, I'm talk about the name that is displayed when you are looking at a text; the sender is shown as [Last Name] [First Name]
I don't disagree that the phone is great, but the battery, screen flicker, slider and other issues are driving me nuts!
I don't understand how the N73, that doesn't have Wi-Fi, has a 1100 mAh while the N80 has 820mAh... It's mad.
Also I think the slider on the 6280 is better too... |

The latest firmwares can be found here

As I said I haven't had time to upgrade my firmware and I'm still running the firmware I got with the phone(3.0614.0.3). |

I agree with that. Didn't SE pretty much admit that the K800i was brought out in response to Nokia releasing a 3MP camera phone and it was a short term competitor until their next Cybershot scheduled for early next year?
I agree with the original poster that the N80 is a great phone on paper but I've heard nothing but bad things about it.
