EARNINGS PREVIEW: Sony Ericsson 2Q Pretax Pft Seen +83%

1132 GMT [Dow Jones] Sony Ericsson is expected Thursday at 0630 GMT to report an 83% rise in 2Q pretax profit of EUR159M versus EUR87M a year ago, an average poll of 24 analysts supplied by SME Direkt shows. Revenues are seen rising 31% to EUR2.1B from EUR1.6B, helped by more sales of expensive, higher margin phones. The average selling price for phones is also forecast to rise to EUR144 from around EUR137. (MRH)

Great! I think it has some thing to do with the recent rise in phones.

Global market share remains static at around 6.5 - 6.8.

has a bigger market share in Western Europe and is supposed to be doing quite well in China.

Well SE doesn't focus on CDMA phones, so the market share may not be a great indidcator of SE's true use in GSM markets.

@shaliron.

I think it was number 3 in Europe after Nokia and Moto.

Nokia has the massive Indian market sewn up and Motorola dominates the American market so, if cant break into these then its overall market share will stay the same.

Even if it done really well in Western Europe it would hardly make a dent in the global market share because of these huge markets.

However, it is still very successful as a company, as the statistics show.

another strong emerging market is Russia

I beileve if my memory on Mobile-review.com analyst report for Russia market...SE is still like number 5 or 6 in Russia....if they can boost their market
there plus market in USA.....their growth in market share
will be bigger.

I can see they are working on getting more phone into US as there's more
quad band phone which allow better nationwide coverage.

whoever can do well in china, india, russia and usa will have a strong market share....

For discussions sake, here are the market sizes (in subscribers):

38% Asia Pacific
19% Western Europe
12% Eastern Europe
11% Other Americas
10% USA/Canada
6% Africa
4% Middle East

As you can see, the US is a pretty small market, the europe market is 3 times bigger, and asia 4 times. All markets are growing fast except for USA/Canada and Western Europe, with Africa and Eastern Europe growing the fastest.

Regarding technologies,
77% GSM
13% CDMA
3.1% TDMA
2.2% W-CDMA
2% PDC
0.9% iDEN
0.3% Analog

So SE isn't missing out on much by ignoring CDMA

SE is a growing smart brand in young well educated good income people. Nokia is number 1 in Africa, India and Arabic regions with not so high salary and education. Nokia is the leader of cheap phones. In India Nokia is selling phones with shopbus-style. But Motorola is coming...

market share is clearly not the priority for SE. you can see this from the fact that its average selling price is increasing whereas nokia's is much lower and dropping because it is chasing the ultra low-end markets in asia and africa. so different priorities, much like porsche vs GM.

Good take up of the cheaper handsets will increase market share although in a recent interview, it was stated that it isn't a priority and that, it will happen naturally if it happens at all.

We need some more high-end expensive handsets, those are the more exciting. High end and :cbs: handsets can surely only enhance the rest of the range.

Yeah, I want an ultra high-end phone as well. Something like what the S700 was or what the N93 is now. But TBH, I'm not holding my breath (all rounder phones are gone )

Mores the pity! is getting soft in its old age.

No more wow factor devices, just more megapixels and bigger flash memory.

Sony Ericsson More than Doubles Year-on-Year Income Before Taxes
13 July 2006

Q2 Highlights:

  • Continued sales & volume growth
  • Positive momentum generates market share gain
  • Success of Walkman® phones continues
  • Launch of first Cyber-shot™ phone

The consolidated financial summary for Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (Sony Ericsson) for the second quarter ended June 30, 2006 is as follows:

Q2 2005 Q1 2006 Q2 2006
Numbers of units shipped (million) 11,8 13,3 15,7
Sales (EURO m.) 1,614 1,992 2,272
Income before taxes (EURO m.) 87 151 211
Net income (EURO m.) 75 109 143

Units shipped in the quarter reached 15.7 million, a 33% increase compared to the same period last year, and generated an increase in market share both on a year-on-year and sequential basis. Sales for the quarter were Euro 2,272 million, representing a year-on-year increase of 41%. Income before taxes was Euro 211 million representing a year-on-year increase of 143%. Net income was Euro 143 million.

Sony Ericsson continued the momentum of the first quarter by shipping three new Walkman® branded phones, the W300, W700 and W42S as well as announcing two new stylish Walkman models: the W850, a tri-band/UMTS slider phone, and the quad-band EDGE W710, the first sports Walkman® with pedometer and jogging applications. The quad-band EDGE W810 Walkman® phone, a follow-up to the popular W800, became a big success during the quarter and continued to build the company’s position as a leader in mobile music. This was further enhanced by the shipment of the W42S for KDDI, the first Walkman® branded phone for the Japanese market.

Following the successful introduction of the Walkman® brand to the mobile phone market last year, the company started shipping the K800, Sony Ericsson’s first Cyber-shot™ branded 3.2 Megapixel camera phone, bringing an instantly recognisable Sony camera brand to its high-tier imaging products. In Japan, Sony Ericsson increased its line up of FOMA™ phones for NTT DoCoMo to three, with the shipment of the SO702i and SO902iWP+.

“The second quarter has seen Sony Ericsson both announce and start to ship a wide variety of products confirming the company’s ability to compete, capture market share and profitably grow the business. With a product line-up that includes a broad range of both basic and feature phones, Sony Ericsson is now in a position to broaden its customer base in all market regions and customer segments,” said Miles Flint, President of Sony Ericsson.

R&D investment continued to increase to support further expansion of the portfolio in 2007 and marketing expenditure also increased as new products, such as the K610, K800 and the eagerly awaited M600 Symbian OS messaging phone entered the market towards the end of the quarter. Average Selling Price (ASP) declined slightly sequentially, due to a greater proportion of low-priced models, such as the J100, J220 and J230 shipping in volume.

Growth in the global handset market continued to outpace expectations, and Sony Ericsson now forecasts the global market outlook for 2006 to be above 950 million units, up from the previous estimate of “above 900 million units”.
