U.S authorities can get access to EU citizens' data on phone calls, sms' and emails, giving a recent EU data-retention law much wider reaching consequences than first expected, reports: euobserver
On 2-3 March, EU and US representatives met in Vienna for an informal high level meeting on freedom, security and justice where the US expressed interest in the future storage of information.
The US delegation to the meeting "indicated that it was considering approaching each [EU] member state to ensure that the data collected on the basis of the recently adopted Directive on data retention be accessible to them," according to the notes of the meeting.

Being too nosy on other's affairs will only lead to US's own nose getting chopped off.

A very good point. However, if that was your real concern, as opposed to being just another transparent effort to demonise America, you might be asking how the EU law came about in the first place.
How can you possibly justify being more critical of the US in trying to gain access to the information than the EU for deciding a policy of retention is necessary in the first place.
Personally, if it all goes to stop a bunch of terrorists blowing us all up - which is evidently the point of the legislation, I have nothing against it.
Sometimes, we have to compromise our "freedoms" because some fundamentalist nutjobs don't value their own lives enough to play by the normal rules, thereby necessitating some concessions on our part to allow our elected governments to protect us.
As someone already pointed out, if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, and whilst it would be nice if we could all exercise our "rights" ad infinitum, it is sadly unrealistic in the present environment to go bleating about every infringement upon them that you can find, especially when the intention is so clearly stated as it is in this legislation.
On the other hand, you don't generally like to take government-stated intentions at face value, do you? Far more fun to feed a conspiracy theory...

Actually in fact that is my real concern believe it or not..however if you think this another of my attempts to demonise the U.S then i'd have to say your right, because the U.S is the great demon and their is no denying that...I can't miss an opertunity like this can i now.
See the problem i have with this legislation is that i don't think it will actually prevent any kind of Terrorist attacks,do you think this will deter would be bombers?...Terrorists who are determined enough will always find a way, neither ID cards or phone tappings will stop them. The only people who suffer are the majority of good law abideing citizens, why should we have to sacrifice our freedoms because of a few nutcases.
Actually your right again,i have absolutely no faith in govenment intentions, specially looking at what they been throwing at us in the last few years.
Concpiracy Theories eh?....
Yeh fun...and as the say the Truth always Hurts!
