After 35 Israeli military vehicles participate in arrest of young mentally handicapped man in refugee camp, he remains imprisoned
27 April 2006

(Nablus) Amin Abu Wardeh 27 April 06

Balata Refugee Camp residents in eastern Nablus still sit in amazement after Israeli forces arrested 22 year old mentally handicapped Mohammad Naji Abu Hamada.

For two weeks human rights institutions have been intervening to secure the release of the northern West Bank man, but to no avail.

When Israeli forces arrested the mentally handicapped man they brought with them 35 military vehicles and spread throughout Balata Refugee Camp in an unusually vast two-hour invasion.

Naji Abu Hamada watched the invasion, wondering what was occurring inside his house. As Israeli soldiers were arresting him, the young man’s family presented documents proving their son was mentally handicapped and certainly could not be put in an Israeli prison. Their pleas and common sense fell on deaf ears.

The family physically tried to prevent the soldiers from taking him. But the soldiers hit harder, dragging the poor man into the truck with all the others they arrested that day.

Another brother in the same family, Ahmed, was also arrested bringing great hardship to the family as he was the only one who worked and brought in money to the home. His father is ill and nearly blind, and therefore cannot work.

Naji Abu Hamada's family lives in a humble house on the Market Street in Balata Refugee Camp. There are four males and three girls in the family. Hamada’s father says that his sons were taken to Huwara military camp with the assurance they would be released after 14 days, however that did not happen.

Researcher in human rights cases, Ahmed Al Bitawi, says that the Israeli authorities do not refrain from detaining Palestinians, regardless of their physical health or psychological state, hinting that there are many mentally handicapped detainees in Israeli prisons without anyone to take care of them.

it's done on a daily basis. They 'arrest' to reduce the population of their enemy.

in palestine, the occupation, regularly goes door to door in villages, brings houses down, i mean the whole village now, not one or two...and then they take every man and boy, arrest them, interrigate them, and keep them until they have been thoroughly abused...
i am not exagerating one bit...
you only have to ask a palestinian to know this...
then wen israeli tankers, sponsered by america come to villages, and a boy chucks pebbles at it, with no effect, they shoot young boys, because they are terrorists...

this is reality, nothing but reality

And look who supports it all...

Huge jump in arms sales to Israel

· Government accused of arming repressive regimes

The number of arms export licences granted for countries the government accuses of human rights abuses increased significantly over the past year, the latest official figures show.

They also show that licences for weapons sales to Saudi Arabia increased by 25% last year, to £25m. They included sales of assault rifles, riot control equipment and body armour.

Licences for British arms sales to Israel last year amounted to nearly £25m, almost double the previous year. The licences covered the export of armoured vehicles and missile components.

I wonder why suffering and hatred spread? Surely it can't have anything to do with demonising people and believing them to be somehow innately evil?
