you are entitled to receive a replacement phone until get one doesn't hiss, or your money back. It seems only a small percentage of actual handsets have the problem, so it may be a little unfair to blame the phone design as such. It's also obviously not a hardware issue, so eventually a firmware will fix the problem (just like it took months to fix the file transfer bug in K750 but eventually it was sorted).

I strongly believe harassing the supplier until they give you a phone you are happy with. That way they have to send the faulty phones back to SE (if everyone who buys one returns it if it hisses) and then SE will get the picture. Law of supply and demand. If it doesn't work take it back.

However I think it's counter productive to encourage people to avoid the phone altogether, since the walkman phones fill a niche and the majority of people who buy them are satisfied.

I have a k750i flashed to w800 firmware R1BC002. Luckily it does not hiss as you are describing (phone came with R1N0005 installed but no hiss with that too. I think that firmware had a better audio than latest firmware though).

Using Farmanager plugin (http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=123260&start=0), I was experimenting with audio settings by modifying file settings.xml (you can find it in FS/tpa/system/multimedia/mp): that file contains equalizer (value of the 5 bands: + or - 8db) and max volume settings (default value is 8 ).

I have noticed that if you push volume and treble bands settings too high hissing tends to appear.
Therefore my suggestion is trying to experiment with that file and see if it helps.

Notice that:

1) less hiss if you increase output volume by increasing volume (with external right key) rather than by increasing equalizer bands settings.

2) if you set equalizer bands in settings.xml to values higher than 8, when you decrease them manually when listening to the music you cannot increase them again, you can only decrease values: so modify manually but don't "confirm" in equalizer screen, use "go back" key instead, to restore settings.xml values.

I hope this findings could be helpful.

One last attempt that you can try is flashing the w800 with k750 firmware (using FARmanager): if it does not hiss anymore it's a software problem (so it may be fixed with future firmwares) otherwise it's a hardware problem (unfixable).

You can restore the phone to w800 using SEUS update or whatever tool you use.

So, I understand that not all the walkman-phones have the hissing-problem?

Think it is W800 and W810 which have "the hiss". I had it to on my W800 but fixed it with FAR...

Sorry for bumping an old thread, does anyone know if the K800/K790 suffer from the same issue (as they use the same walkman software as the older W series)

I don't think so.
