Well just phoned mobileshop again, they are so full of crap, I've been told (on different days) that the phones were on a dock in Portsmouth, Grimsby and just now in London. Now they are not expecting till middle of next week.
I'm porting my number and the code is only valid for 30 days so if it drags on I'll need to go with a different phone just to keep my number, grrrr.

I have had a few New recent Nokias as well. All of them seem to have some kind of problem at first. It takes some updates to get them right..

If one despairs with the first little problem that comes along then one should not buy such a sophisticated and technically complex device.
People should also use and test the phone themselves prior to commenting on stability issues, as everyone sees things and makes comments on these issues totally from a personal perspective..

SE will put the monor issues right very quickly i guess.
My initial personal feeling about this device is that it is a very special product and it will be the basis on which SE Ericsson will release their next top product.
I just love it.

Can you actually remove Opera from the phone or is it part of the firmware? Just curious incase another better/stable browser is ever developed?

@Ericl How much did you pay for the crap ? You are not the only one buddy. I feel sorry for you. My brother's does exactly the same. I've toled him to visit this forum and ask for help but he could't bother. Send it back yesterday for a full refund. I strongly suggest you do the same.

I contacted SE support. They told me they wouldn't help me as the 990 isn't yet released in the UK and they didn't know where Expansys were sourcing their stocks.

As Sleepyhead said earlier, send it back to expansys for a replacement...it does seem like your unit is faulty. My p990i from expansys is good as gold so get them to replace it.

to be honest after using p910i i have learnt a lot about uiq

you need to understand this OS flatform cause using uiq is not a joke...if one file/one mistake/one step can make things worse..!!

whenever u open a prog/app do not forget to click on exit while closing it...

there might be some faults but... den u have to understand how to solve it...specially when it comes to web browser and email client and now we have wifi ....

i'll share my xp... i wanted to configure my e-mail client it took me 2 days...afta that it started working, its soo complicated...but then when it works..its amazing..!!..and thats why i love uiq..!!! and as we now have uiq 3.0...and iv been m600i and browsed too..i think its nice..to use...!!...afta a good tech we have...its gonna be blast ...afta months when applications will roll out !!

Prom1,
no need for insults i didn't insult you did I? and i definitely wasn't doing anything with my tongue anywhere near your sorry ass.

Loyalty is earned not a given, and trust me i used to be an Ericsson and then SE fan big time. I used to run a Mobile Data Co and be given equipment from Ericsson to test so i do actually know a little about what i am saying.

As for Opera being the only company with the resources to develop a browser for it, well frankly that's just rubbish. Go to your local phone store and pick up an N73 and see what the Safari variant browser is like, very fast and stable and see what the web pages look like and it has some pretty neat navigation tricks and that was developed for S60 3rd edition.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing but an open mind is priceless.

I don't understand why everyone is saying that the phone is full of bugs. I have had mine since tuesday morning and i haven't so far (touch wood) had it crash. In face it's been quite the opposite. Everything runs fast and using wifi in my house to surf the web is easy to use and fast. There may be many people complaining but i for one am very impressed with this phone and seeing as it was free on my contract i'm a very happy person!!!

@Dogman, my quote was a joke, a bad play unto words of your experience and on your callsign. Sorry if it offended you.

> Now if you're so experienced & ran a data center you'd know that the UIQ3 GUI is completely different and CANNOT run native Nokia S60 3rd edition applications, let alone 2nd edition S60 apps. Just because NetFront is available for 2nd Ed 60 phones doesnt mean it'll work nor get ported easily to UIq3. Symbian OS is the common CORE OS for both UIQ3 & S60 but BOTH implement specific changes in what features are used, how their implemented and how apps interact with the core OS.

I tend to see all current/former S60 phones as Smartphones - phones first. I tend to see the P-Series as incredibly built as a phone 1st in implementation; but its still a Professional Assistant Device like a PPC.

> btw, SE's developer platform shows an SDK or something like it to port S60 2nd edition apps to UiQ3.

> I still see NO proof of NetFront or other browser available for the P990i; that should give you a hint of why SE chose Opera.

> To owners of the P990i; is it possible for you to be able to increase memory upon first boot?! (I'm really hoping new firmwares will have Opera REMOVED; to allow it as a 3rd party installable application).

I deleted Private Data from Opera and uninstalled the demo & other games and after a re-boot I had 1MB more than before, but after subsequent re-boots I lost it again - but my try again after a Master Reset and see what that does

Perhaps everyone is getting a bit paranoid about the memory thing.

I have run many applications together. Not a crash yet. My memory after a full days use is hovering around the 7 MB mark...Phone still works perfectly.

I have a dual core Vaio and I have succeeded in crashing that through overloading..And please do not tell me it is another Sony product..

It appears that some people are trying to crash their phone rather than use it..

Hi Prom1,
OK i can accept i may have a sense of humour bypass just now due to pain and meds, but the point i was makeing is S60 3rd edition like UIQ3 is a new version of a previous operating system that requires software to be written specifically for it.

Now although Opera is the default browser on S60 2nd edition and yes this was not bug free either the browser for 3rd edition well at least in the N73 is new and is a Safari variant and excellent. The amount of time between the announcement of the P990 and it's actual arrival was IMO more than long enough for whatever browser was to be included to be made to function correctly. If makeing the cache setting larger resolves some of the problems why is this not how the unit ships? or at the very least at least an advisory note included. Why has it taken an end user to make this discovery for it to be known to all.

I do like the new SE phones and although i prefer the W950 to the P990 just my personal needs and likes There is no way i am going to pay for anything that doesn't work to an acceptable degree straight out the box. Maybe I've just got less tolerant in my old age but the days of spending hours to get bits of kit to work and putting up with crashes and the like are long gone for me.

@Avantis

With my M600 I became disciplined shutting down the web app and the messaging app when I didn't really need them. This meant I never had the famous 're-started to improve performance' re-boot. But with the P990 I have not been so careful (playing with the new toy syndrome) and that's probably why I've had more problems than expected. Will keep an eye on the RAM and see if that makes it as stable as my M600.
