Strong Quake Rocks Indian Subcontinent
By CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA, Associated Press Writer
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked large swaths of Pakistan, India and
Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least six people. Pakistan's army said initial reports indicate the damage was widespread in that country.
Four of the dead were in northwestern Pakistan, a relief official in the area said. Police in India-controlled
Kashmir said an infant and another person died there. At least a dozen people were injured, and dozens more were feared trapped in the rubble of a 10-story apartment building in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital.
Pakistan's private television news station, Geo, said it had received unconfirmed reports that at least 25 people had died in Pakistan's part of Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan territory.
Two interior ministry officials in Islamabad said there were fatalities, but they had no details. The officials did not want to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
