Hey, I have a question:

I'm using my Compaq Laptop via Wifi but dont know how to connect to my printer wirelessly.

Previously I ran a cable from the USB port on the laptop to the square connector on the printer (Canon Pixma iP 3000). Do I now connect the printer to the router? The router doesn't have a USB port, do I need a new cable?

Help?!?

Nope, you probably need a new printer!

Basically, you need a printer with built in network printing capability. If your printer has an ethernet (network) connector then you can connect it to your wireless router with a standard cat5 network cable.

If it doesn't, one alternative would be to buy the cheapest second hand PC you can find, stick it on the wireless network and install the printer on that using the USB cable as normal.

Other than that, you're stuck with having it wired up to your laptop

Hmmm... I knew I should have spent a bit more on a printer

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Not stupid at all!

http://www.futuremark.com/products/

These guys offer a range of benchmarking programs. 3dMark '01, 3dMark 03 and PCMark '04 are must-haves, the demos are limited but still give you a pretty good idea of what your PC is capable of. I wouldn't bother with 3dMark '05. Even dual-core systems with SLI graphics score poorly with that, it's just rediculously demanding on your PC!

Aquamark 3 is another well known benchmarking app, and quite pretty to watch if your PC is up to running it properly.

my pc used to switch off automatically but now doesnt. it will either say "it is now safe to turn off your computer" instead of switching off automatically or it will make a noise as if its switched off and the modem, etc.. will go off but the pc will still be on. i have got apm on btw. also sometimes my pc screen will sometimes go blank then come back on and the display will be set to the lowest and it would be all messed up. if you restart it would be back to normal and an error report comes up and says it has something to do with the 3dfx banshee drivers even though i think i found a updated one. can you help?

Have you tried a different graphics card? I'm not being funny, but if you're running a banshee card it must be pretty old by now and they do pack up!

Depends on your monitor, but you should still get at least 800x600 with that old card. You will need to download the drivers for it though, unless you're running Windows ME or XP in which case the OS probably supports it natively anyway.

It's just worth trying it to see if it is your banshee card. If the PC's ok with your old card, you'll know that you need a new card and you can get a slightly better one. There's 128Mb Geforce FX5200 cards out there for about 30 quid.

Nah, even 4 meg cards were capable of 16 bit colour depth which produces very near photo quality.

What volume? If it's wave volume it's possible some game or app is changing it. If winamp volume goes up-down it may be cause you're holding mobile close to mouse or keypad.
