@mrao- I mentioned a dl speed of 15kb/s, not the connectivity speed. Connectivity speed on an EDGE network with an EDGE enabled handset would go upto 180kbps~200kbps.
If you say that you get twice the speed~ pls elaborate

I already have....a few posts prior to this one....i average 5 to 7 KBps...which is a minimum of 40 kbps...which is actually more than twice the 15 kbps you mentioned Im presuming you meant 15 KBps Theres a difference between Kilobytes per sec and kilobits per sec

Thats the theoretical maximum...not necessarily so in real time network conditions

True, especially if you have Network Operators like Airtel Mumbai!

I thought there was class 12 devices (especially from motorola) ,which is the maximum in theory.
Btw,airtel gprs needs serious upgradation, speeds are way too slow at peak hours.

Thanks again Sudipt, but all that didn't make much sense to me. I'll do a search and read up on gprs and egprs technology. |

@amby, perhaps This Article might interest you!
mrao, how and where do you check your gprs speed?
I did it on dslreport the other day and it reported a speed of 4 kBps which is around 32kbps..NOT BAD IS IT??

Thanks a lot whiz, that article cleared up the fog.
I also use dslreport for speed testing. |

Shyam, I can confirm I have come across Chips from Ti-OMAP 750 & ARM too have chips which support class12 GPRS. |

I have Compaq laptop connected to dial-up internet (50 kbps) via K700i and Bluetooth connection. MS XP SP2 and K700i allow serial port speed of 400+ kbps when using GPRS (from VodafoneNZ) or 14.4 kbps when connected by VF WAP (9.6 kbps with my wife's Z600 on WAP).
GPRS in NZ is 53 kbps, optimised to approx 90kbps - I've tested it, I got 95 kbps on a ADSL(256 kbps) internet connection.
3G in NZ is 384 kbps, optimised up tp approx 500 kbps. Unfortunately, reception is not available where I live.
I dial *99# to connect to GPRS, and a number supplied by my ISP to connect to VF WAP (not recommended).

I believe if you get 16kbits effective throughput on GPRS it is good. EDGE will give you much more with good coverage.
