I'm using a Nokia 9300, which is Class 10 GPRS handset with EGRPS (Edge). I use a dku-2 to connect it to my PC. IR is slower than USB cable

First of all edge is not implemented in airtel mumbai. It's only for airtel live tv.I am telling from my personal experience ,i connected my 6630(class 10 edge handset)to toshiba laptop by supplied dku-2 usb cable. On connecting,it said connection at 250kbps.Actual speed was not more than 15 kbps in night. At day time,it max out at 10kbps.So i dont see point in getting edge enabled handset only for this purpose of airtel. And now they charge 400 bucks per month for 100mb so i will say using mtnl broadband for 500 rs per month, and 1gb download cap is much better deal.In my ho.

Dr. Pratik, Airtel Mumbai has implemented EGDE- atleast that's what they claim. Airtel Mumbai, says GRPRS download speed should be around 14~18kb/s and connectivity speed of around 200kbps
However I get dl speeds now around 3~4kb/s and connectivity speed (as tested) of around 28kbps (peak time) and 40kbps (non-peak) which is pathetic by EDGE standards....
I'm also considering other options...
I use a N9300 with dku-2 USB cable.
Thanks (anyone facing a similar speed problem with Airtel Mumbai?) |

@sudipt... i get twice that speed with a non EDGE device...and ive changed 6 devices over the past 12 months..on the same network ...so it probably has to do with the device you're using ... Nokia, is it

Twice? The best im able to get is 6kBps during off peak, during peak it goes down to 2.I tried several phones btw.
So edge should give you around 18kBps during off peak and around 10 during peak .Im on airtel btw.

That is actually very good. GPRS can give you 30..50kbps. EDGE 60..80kbps.

What does this translate to in KBps? I find it easier to comprehend actual download speeds. |

@amby: to get approx. transfer speeds in KBps, divide d network speeds (in kbps) by 8. so if u have say a 40kbps connection, ur actual download speed would hover around 5KBps which imho is fair for a gprs dial-up connection.

@shyam, this is what i meant when i said i get twice the speed, in comparison with sudipt s 15 kbps with an EDGE phone

In theory you should achieve a max link speed of 40.2kbps and 13.4kbps for upload, thats for 3+1 gprs enabled device. And then the network operator could cut your download to maybe 2 channels and you achieve only 26.8kbps. Also the serial IR is capable of 115.2bps , enough to suport a 3+1 gprs.

@mrao- I mentioned a dl speed of 15kb/s, not the connectivity speed. Connectivity speed on an EDGE network with an EDGE enabled handset would go upto 180kbps~200kbps.
If you say that you get twice the speed~ pls elaborate |

Bad news for Airtel Mumbai GPRS users:- Just got it confirmed from an Airtel GPRS Engineer that there is a bandwidth allocation problem, hence the slow speed... They are working on the problem... dunno it might take ages! and Airtel is talking about a 3G network here... a sad joke! They can't handle the EDGE bandwidth.
Thinking on moving to DSL/ Hutch maybe;) |
