Cheers Lo-Co! I'm still fag free, though would kill for one at times!
Interesting butt pouch that, I never had anything like that handed to me whilst smoking! Good idea though, cut down on fag ends on the street.

That's a rather spiffy idea! I wouldn't mind a portable ashtray.

Good grief govigov! I hope it wasn't a good cigar! That's one of my pet peeves, people who stub good cigars out without smoking them properly!

First of all my sincere condolences to all those 16-17 year old british citizens that are no longer legally allowed to buy tobbacco products from today.
For those of you that dont know, the government has raised the legal age for smoking to 18

Even though you can legally have sex, join the army/drive a car, you cant buy a fine cigar to celebrate your 16th and 17th birthdays.
on the flip side if anyone thinks this will stop 16/17 year olds from smoking they are sadly mistaken.....

I have to say that I was totally perplexed when I heard this morning that a law could be introduced that stops 16 and 17 year old buying cigarettes and yet still allows them to legally smoke them
where's the sense in that

exactly, as i read, one will be just getting there parents to buy them for them.... its probably just going to affect the shops that sell them. |

I'm not sure how effective this change in the law will be. I doubt it will stop under 18s from smoking if they want to, just as the old law didn't stop under 16s from smoking. I am all in favour of moves to stop people taking up smoking early; the decision to start smoking should be a conscious choice made with one's own free will and when one has full knowledge of the facts on smoking.
I find it perplexing that 16 and 17 year olds are allowed to smoke, but can't buy tobacco. That sends out a mixed message and will no doubt result in people buying tobacco for under 18s.
The article raises a good point; you can join the army at 16; in Scotland you can order beer and wine in a restaurant at 16, and yet you can't buy a cigar. It's nonsense if you ask me. If a 16 year old is old enough to decide he or she wants to join the army and fight for Queen and Country then I think he or she is old enough to decide whether or not to start smoking.
One last thing; if you want to persuade people not to smoke in the first place then the best thing you can do is to arm them with the facts on smoking. People then have a choice. What I would say though, is that the anti-smoking lobby should be aware that some people do choose to smoke.
