Hey, I know how you can solve you're problems: quit. "O, woe is me for I have to walk for a bit before I can smoke". You pussy.
I've got no problem with people smoking, because people do weirder things (like immigrate to America, or vote Labour), but when people start bitching about how hard their life is because of something they choose to do it just craps me up the wall.

Yeah like all the fattys who moan when they have to walk!

Anyways, I’d like to know the correct way of smoking a cigar, my old man has always smoked them but not the large kind, always used to be Tom Thumb (I used to collect the train cards that came with them ) and now café cream.

I have tired a café cream but I understand you smoke them differently from cigarettes, don’t take it down or something.

Any advice?

I got nothing against smokers but I really hate the smell!!

One thing that's come to my attention though is that when you walk past my biology teacher's office and it smells like fags, you know it's going to be a good lesson, she's relaxed and happy ffs(you don't see that often if she aint had a smoke)! (See her smoking in her office, normaly pulls the blinds down but let it slip just once). At that point the smell of fags is great!!

Just thought I'd share it with you all.

Joe my lad, this is one of the most important rights of passage to becoming a man; how to smoke a cigar.

The first thing to do is recognise the difference between the likes of a Cafe Creme and a proper cigar. Cafe Creme, Hamlet, etc are fine for a quick smoke, but they aren't cigars, not proper cigars. They are simpler, baser and unrefined, but despite all that they can be enjoyable. Let's deal with them first.

Whether it's a mini cigar or a normal sized cigar one tends not to inhale, one merely savours the flavour and then exhales. These sort of cigars can be lit with a lighter or a match since they tend not to have any great flavour to spoil. They can also be smoked relatively quickly, but one should not chain smoke them like cigarettes; they are more powerful than cigarettes and you will find that one cigar is quite adequate for a morning or an afternoon.

Now onto the real deal; proper cigars. There is a lot to know about cigars, but I shall keep this simple since this is an introduction.

Choosing Your Cigar

Cigars come in various sizes and widths and size isn't necessarily an indication of strength. For a morning cigar, that is a cigar you want to enjoy with your morning coffee, I would recommend one of the smaller sized Montecristos. Montecristo tends to be a mild brand, very pleasant flavour, nothing too strong and excellent for that first smoke of the day. Look for something around 4 or 5 inches long for a morning cigar.

An afternoon cigar can be a tad stronger, by this point in the day you may be a little tired or sleepy, especially after lunch so something with a bit of kick can be useful to waken you up. Montecristo is again a good choice, but you may like something a bit stronger on the palate. Punch make good cigars, they aren't overpowering, but strong enough to be felt. Romeo y Julieta would also be a good choice, their smaller cigars have a very nice flavour, but shouldn't overwhelm your mouth. I would recommend something in the order of 5 to 6 inches in length.

Your evening cigar, the cigar you smoke after dinner, is your main cigar of the day and as such deserves a bit of thought. The cigar you choose should depend upon what you have had to eat. If you have had a meal with strong flavours you will probably want a cigar with a strong flavour so that the food doesn't mask it. A Bolivar would be a good choice, the larger ones can be quite powerful and make a fine smoke after a heavy and strongly flavoured meal. Romeo y Julieta is also a good choice; perhaps not quite as strong as Bolivar, but it would still be powerful enough to carry you into the evening. Cohiba is another good choice, they make some very good cigars and are worth trying; you may like to use a smaller Cohiba as your afternoon cigar. In terms of size you would be looking at something in the order of 7+ inches in length.

Preparing to Smoke

A cigar isn't a cigarette, it isn't some cheap convenience that you light up, smoke and discard. A cigar is an experience, it is a luxury that deserves respect and admiration.

Check your cigar for signs of damage. You don't want to be smoking a cigar that may fall apart half way through smoking it! If your cigar looks to be in good health feel it; it should not feel too hard nor too soft; there should be a slight softness when you press it between your fingers.

Cutting Your Cigar

Either use a cigar cutter to cut the end off the cigar or use a sharp implement to pierce a hole in the end. If you opt to cut then use a cigar cutter to cut the end of the cigar just before the point where the end of the cigar curves. You want to make as clean a cut as possible so do it in one solid motion. You don't want to have to make several cuts in case you damage the cigar.

I prefer to poke a hole in the end of the cigar myself. I take something sharp, a toothpick for example, and make a small hole in the end of the cigar. Don't make the hold too deep, just a short poke should do it. Make sure the hold is big enough though, but don't go mad, again one does not want to damage the cigar.

Lighting Your Cigar

Always use a match to light your cigar. Lighters can spoil the flavour of a cigar due to the petrol or gas used. You can get specialised cigar lighters, but a match will do quite nicely.

You need to first warm your cigar. Hold your cigar perpendicular to the match flame and gently rotate the cigar in the flame until the front of the cigar is evenly charred. Don't hold the cigar directly over the flame as it will become too hot.

Once the front of the cigar (the foot) is evenly charred keep it in the flame and gently puff on the cigar until the flames rise up. Rotate the cigar in the flame as you do this so that there is an even burn. If there isn't an even burn your cigar may 'canoe', which means that one part of it may burn faster than another.

Be patient during this process, it is as much a part of smoking a cigar as the actual smoking part. This is a ritual and should be enjoyed, it should not be hurried as a chore.

Smoking Your Cigar

Once your cigar is lit gently puff it, allowing the smoke to fill your mouth before exhaling. Don't rush a cigar, it isn't a race. As the smoke enters your mouth taste the flavours and savour them. You may wish to pair a cigar up with a particular drink, the flavours accentuating one another. Of course you have to match a drink properly, too strong a drink and it may overwhelm the cigar.

The ash should be allowed to gently fall away from the cigar in due course. If you want to remove ash from the cigar then roll the cigar gently on the ashtray.

A large cigar, 7+ inches, may take a couple of hours to smoke. Don't worry of it goes out during that time, that happens. Just follow the lighting procedure again.

If your cigar has a band on it you may wish to remove it once the cigar has been lit for a while. Do not remove it before the cigar is lit as you may damage the cigar. Once the cigar has been warmed up the band may become looser and you will able to remove it safely. The custom in Britain is to remove the band so as not to show off one's brand, but if it looks as if you may damage the cigar by doing so then don't.

The Death of Your Cigar

One does not murder a cigar by putting it out, one allows it to die with dignity. Once your cigar is near the end of its life place it in the ashtray and allow it to quietly fade.

well someones gotta keep the road sweeper in a job

But i could just as much go out and take snaps of the many chrisp packets, sweet wrappers...etc

Thing which has annoyed me with the new smoking law is they now expect you to smoke out side but I have only seen a few pubs and that provide ashtrays. Why hasn’t the councils put around the place ashtrays/bins for people to put there cigarettes out in?

Yeah you could, but crisp packets in the "Smokers Thread"? They'll go in "The crisp eaters thread" wouldn't they? LOL I just saw a whole lot of the things on the way home, smokers have a bad enough name as it is with out this crap everywhere. As for the pub's, many are providing butt end bins outside now...

Pubs are providing for smokers but not everyone only smokes when at the pub. During my cigarette break at work there is no where to stick my dog end!

One of my favourite restaurants still permits smoking in their outside area! Huzzah! They have heaters out there too so that one can sit and enjoy a meal ,and a delish cigar of course, even if it is a tad chilly. Double huzzah!

I guess I'd better not post in here any more, I've just given up (again!)

4 days without a fag so far, would love one!

I might try taking up cigar smoking like Scotsboy, find some proper cigars and savour them!

Standing outside Tesco today having a ciggie I was approached by a woman wearing a "See Me" day glow jacket, she handed me this. Personal Butt pouch

Explaining that if I was seen throwing a butt end on the floor I could face an instant £75 on-the-spot fine.
