Cyco Darling,
I have 138GB of ?????????? on my hard drive and I want to get rid!!
I am currently transferring all of my important files over to an external hard drive, but I don't want to just delete the other 138GB without knowing what it is!
What is the best/fastest way to find the files to check them before deletion?
Or could you just pop over and sort it and I'll get us a 2 litre bottle of White Lightening each

The latter suggestion sounds like the best idea to me but Warrington is a little bit too far from Newark at this time of night
That's actually a tough question! Personally, I'd just delete the good stuff once I'm sure I've backed it up (the reason for this will become apparent shortly) and then search the entire drive for individual file types using wild cards.
For example, I'd search it for *.jpg to make sure I've not missed any photos that I might want, then for *.mp3 followed by *.aac for music, followed by *.mpg for movies etc. etc.
I realise that windows XP search is a bloody pain in the bum, so I often download a third party app like copernic desktop search and use that to make the process slightly less painless. That's why you should delete all of the stuff that you've already backed up before you do it, it makes the indexing and searching happen a lot quicker!
Hope I've understood your question correctly

Yes you answered 100% correctly and its exactly what I am doing! which is reassuring now you've suggested it too!
Trouble is I'm on vista and I'm finding search even more difficulterer than XP so I'll try that desktop search you suggested!
And as for the files I wanna keep I have been painfully cutting and pasting the folders I wanted so as to not recreate copy's of copy's of copy's as vista seemed to multiply my files upon upgrading hence the clean out and eventual fresh install!
Cheers!
Where do I send the White Lightening to?

Ooooh errr! Vista?
I'm not sure copernic works with vista but it's worth a try! Only reason I like it is that, once it has indexed, it's very fast and it seems to display it's results much more clearly.
I can't really think of any better way to sift through unknown data, maybe somebody else could suggest something? There's tons of file and media managers out there but at the end of day they only do what what you're already doing but with unnecessary complications!
Thanks for the white lightning bud! Tastes like P**s but it's stopped my shaking for now

Cyco, got a slight problem. I've been using Nero 7 for a while, everything was fine, all of a sudden its started coming up with this...
Now it won't let me use the software. Any ideas?

Sounds like you might have an older version of Nero 7, It creates the odd registry error or two which causes the crash. Can you try the following to make sure?
1. Create a new user within XP
2. Log off and log in as the new user
3. Run Nero 7 and see if it works!
If it works under the new user then you need to upgrade to Nero 7.0.1.4b or higher by clicking on the 'free update' link on this page here
Obviously, you can delete the new user afterwards

Cheers for that, 1st part worked but trying to upgrade nero is giving me grief. The key that I have for Nero isn't accepted for the upgrade.
May just have to switch between users to burn my discs, unless you have any other ideas?
Thanks

Unless you're using an, ahem, shared copy of Nero you should contact them by phone and tell them that your key is not being accepted!
Other than that, I suppose you'll just have to do as you suggested until the next time you reinstall since, so far, I've not found a third-party patch for the problem. That's not to say that there isn't one out there though, you might find something with a bit of hardcore googling!
Or of course you could maybe share another copy with somebody *whistles*

this and this seem to explain the problem
I'm upgrading my laptop drive from 160gb to 250gb and so used trueimage to clone the new disk.
it seems the way vista uniquely identifies the disk is the problem and the moment both drives had the same ID vista automatically changed them both but in a way that neither would then boot!
I found that the vaio recovery disks did first fix the problem though it left the system thinking there were two operating systems on the drive when in reality there is only one. On boot it asked me to choose and trying both it seems one works and one doesn't
I also learned that Vista uses a new booting method and since it was pretty hard to change this unique ID I have resorted to using my vaio restore disks to going back to scratch (probably a good idea anyway) and then reinstalling what I need
so alls well that ends well and I am now a little wiser in the workings of vista!

@cyco - Can you also remedy problems on - cds I burned about 15 images in the writer at first . . . afterwhich I added another 15, I accidentally over-written the ORIGINAL title of the CD with a NEW one . . . after that, I can only manage to see the LATEST 15-image transfers, but the ORIGINAL 15 were MISSING . . . when I have tried re-inserting the cd, I just can't SEE any image now at all as if it was a blank cd and cannot be USED anymore . . . what gives? Thanks in advance mate !

If there is space to add one more image, you could try that and leave the title as it is. Hopefully the meta data will be updated correctly this time (it'll be written to a new track)
It could be a bug with your CD writing software, or you maybe need to adjust the settings for multi-session disk writing.
More likely though, it might just be a dodgy CD, in which case there's nothing you can do really
