I just went on the Sony site and stumbled across this page:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?page=gsapopup&Redir=template%3DSP1%26B%3Die%26PID%3D9940%26LM%3DSD_VPF

I've been here before to try and find out specs that might of been updated, i went on solution finder to try and get an answer in real time.

Solution Finder puts the experience and knowledge of Sony Ericsson engineers and technical support staff at your fingertips! Simply ask a question, in plain English, and the Solution Finder system will try to answer it using the entire Sony Ericsson knowledge base of Product Specifications and Support information.

I went to ask to question about the pro duo media and this is what i got:

Is memory stick PRO DUO compatible with P800?

Memory stick PRO DUO is NOT COMPATIBLE with P800, only memory stick DUO.

This solution is valid for the following products

P800

Memory stick

Memory stick PRO DUO

This solution also answers the following questions:

Is memory stick PRO DUO media compatible with P800?

Can I use memory stick PRO DUO media with P800?

Then i asked:

What kind of Memory Stick Duo does my phone support (P800)

Currently biggest size of Memory Stick Duo is 64 megabyte which is also supported by P800. Memory Stick Duo Pro 512 MB or 256 MB is not supported and MAY not function.

This solution is valid for the following product and environment:

External storage

P800

P802

Memory Stick Duo

This solution also answers the following questions:

Is Memory Stick duo pro 256 MB supported in my phone

Is Memory Stick duo pro 512 MB supported in my phone

What kind of Memory Stick Duo does my phone support

It seems sony want us to struggle with our small 128MB little DUOs which although they are ok, they aint big enuff! But what is this may not work, it does not say will not work its silly, but this is their official word so im more likely to believe it now.

Hi Guys,

just went to DOML today and tried it out... sad to say, the 256MB is an MS Pro DUO and it does not work on my P800... "Disk Corrupt" is the error msg I always receive when trying to do a format on D:

Oh... almost forgot to mention, the new 128MB DUO which I've stated in my earlier post above, really is dark grey in colour, has a graph behind the box (too bad it's in japanese that I can't read) stated its up to 5x faster than some other memories... could that be they are comparing to our normal 128MB white DUO?

The transfer speed is maybe higher..but is it really faster transfered on a P800?
Or is it just like CD/R, they can accept till 48x, but if you writer only have a maximum speed of it 4x, it will change nothing...

@neilbcool

Those Real-Time-Solution-Finder is the state as it is now. It is nothing new. Where do you think those Customer Support that answer our email get the answer from?

However, what Sage witness probably can give us an indication that a firmware upgrade to support the DuoPro is soon to be release. Be positive.

As much as I want to believe that the P800 would be able to read the duo pro, l think that the few firmware upgrades they have made solve the majority of issues that the public have wanted to be adressed. To re-write the software that reads the memory would not be something that sony ericsson would have high on the agenda, there are very few of us that write to them explaining how much we would like the extra memory. Sony will be heavily focusing on the new P*** to try and make it as superior over the P800 as possible so that everyone buys it up instead of upgrading our phones. This is just my theory although l hope it is disproved and sony ericsson pay attention to our pleas so get mailing them!

Here's a thought. I sent an email to Sony Style - the web site that sells memory sticks and, therefore, would want to take my money if they could sell me something that was compatible with my phone (you'd think).

Below is the reply, followed by my query. I'll leave others to draw conclusions that the 256Mb Pro Duo won't work on the P800....

Dear Mr. Austin,

Thank you for your email.

Unortunately, the Memory Stick PRO DUO is not compatible with the P800 mobile phone. Only the 64MB and
128MB MagicGate Memory StickDUO's are compatible.

Through us at SonyStyle, you can purchase the 64MB MagicGate MS DUO for 55GBP (incl VAT).

We hope to have informed you accordingly.

Kind regards,

Dear Sir/Madam

Please would you let me know whether the above product compatible with
the Sony Ericsson P800 mobile phone.

If it is not, would you please provide me with the catalogue numbers of
any 128Mb or 256Mb duo discs which are compatible
with the P800.

Many thanks in advance

Well when i spoke to sony style they didnt know anything and said that I should contact SE I did this by phone and waited 10 mins before hanging up. I just emailed them instead and got the same response, I think a firmware upgrade is not very likely considering the release of the P900 this month. I would like it though

The email i got:

Dear Mr Blackwood,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Customer Care Centre.

Answer:
Regarding your enquiry, we can confirm that the Sony memory stick pro duo is not compatible with the P800.

Please contact the Sony Ericsson Customer Care Centre again if we can assist you further.

Kind Regards,
Robert Ramsey

I might have to send some angry emails asking why it cant be done

@ neil

what makes you so sure the PRO works with the P900? haven't seen any review showing that it works. I guess a lot will be disappointed if it doesn't.

I asked Sony Ericsson about firware upgrade on the P800 to enable them to use the Duo Pro and they said that there was design restriction. See email below.

"Dear Sir or Madam,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson Customer Care Centre.

This is NOT compatable, the P800 is only built and designed to work with 128MB or less. It will also not work with the other cards mentioned in your email, unfortunatly this is the design and therefore a software upgrade will not enable this.

Please contact the Sony Ericsson Customer Care Centre again if we can assist you further.

Kind Regards,
Samantha McKay"

From the french Review here:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pdafrance.com%2Farticles%2Farticle.php%3Fcat%3Dtestssmartphone%26id%3D312&lp=fr_en&tt=url

They seem to have found out as blue pointed out that the Pro Duo is compatible with the P900 making it a much more attractive option to buy, memory wise, over the P800, with its limited 128MB restriction at present.

Babels Translation isnt that good but you get the idea:

The arrival of Memory Stick Duo Pro, compatible with P900, and having storage capacity much more interesting (256 Mb, 512 Mb and even 1 Gb) ravira all the fans MP3, vidéos and photographs. As always, Memory Stick Duo could be used in the apparatuses compatible with Memory Stick Traditional thanks to a provided adapter but the reverse will not be possible (what is extremely regrettable on P900 since the stylet is not there any more to obstruct a possible protuberance of traditional Memory Stick).
