Im considering purchasing the M600i on ebay, however im a little woprried that if i wait until the phone is officially released in Australia, the software will be better on the official release version. When the phone is released in Aus, will i be able to update to the latest firmware?
Will there be any difference between an official release M600i in Australia as opposed to buying one from Hong Kong?
Also is there chance the hardware will be slightly different to the offical release one?
Should I wait until it is 'officially' released or would you get one off ebay? |

the HK ones are fairly similar to the what the rest of the world gets. The firmware may be different to what will be released.
I say get one off ebay, if the seller is trusted, and then if the phone is buggy or you dont like it you could sell it for quite a bit as its not being released here until about august...
But Sony Ericsson replied to one of my emails saying that the phones se dont have international warranty, so its not coveredin Aust if it needs repairing.
Also, if something does go wrong, repair centres wont be able to do anything to it as it has not been released here yet, and they dont know what they are doing. |

is this true? how come its not indicated in the official specs, unlike the P990? i sorta figured that this is one of those things which differentiates it to the other.

sorry if it was misleading, but since the post right before mine was listing various advantages for the e61 i merely added one thing that i thought was rather obvious : WIFI which the m600i lacks

You should test to use the opera java app. Its actually faster and better than the built in opera. Altough it misses the ability to have multiple pages open.

It also completly misses the ability to render pages as they are intended to be. Opera Mini is designed for non 3G, non smartphone devices with small screens which don't have a proper built in (X)HTML browser. It would be the equivalent of saying why not use the Lynx browser instead of IE/Firefox/Opera on a desktop PC.
I find the full built in Opera browser perfectly adequate speed wise with 3G at loading and correctly displaying sites. It also has the benefit of every site you visit not having to pass through Opera's own servers first too. |

I need this phone in the next 6 weeks, therefore how reliable is your AUG release date for AUS?
Also will i be able to update the firmware to the current AUS firmware when its released later down the track or will the physical hardware to differnet? Bottomw line has anyoneh ad any troubles importing phones?
One last thing, i want white but i also think the colour might date faster because dirt and scratched show up more on white. Any suggestions on colour? |

personally i like white better but i had no choice bu to get a black one, should be getting it soon. My w810i was from hk but that worked fine, software was perfect, but i changd to EU2 from the hk one.
The m600i hardware is the same for every country, where as the firmware is not. Each firmware may have differene applications, games etc.
And yes you can update the firmware to an aussie one. |

if you read a pages back on this thread you will see White M600s are more expensive in the UK as the retailers seems to be selling Black M600s with their network contracts. You might find this is also true in Aus as well. So get a white one if you have a choice and there is no price difference. I am now thinking I should have got a White as well (I can hear Masseur having a good chuckle at this point ).

right, as mention.. I'm exclusively on the M600 now since my K-jam is being collected for a small repair today.
doing my normal browsing on the train into the office I find I am now left with 68% battery whereas on the k-jam it hardly made a dent, maybe 4 or 5%
I'm impressed by the 3g speed while browsing so no ocmplaints with the web browser in that regard.
I did find that the keyboard shortcuts (0 for page refresh etc) stopped working and I had to restart the web application from scratch to get those back.
I tried various zoom levels ni portrait mode but I find the text quite rough around the edges. It looks much nicer in landscape mode.
I'm not going to charge the battery until I have to, I wanna see just what I can get out of it today. My philosophy with batteries is that if I can do everything I want during the day and get home with 20% to spare then I'm happy since I always sync/charge in the evening and morning anyway
lets see...

re: battery capacity
Masseur, funny that, I started to keep a detailed log today of my usage. Will post results tomorrow (using my original battery which has had two full charges and lots of quick charges via USB).
USB charging - people please read the manual on this. Not recommended if you use a laptop on battery power or a USB hub

oh, and the other annoyance was the backlight dimming when I am only half way through reading an email or web page andtere seems to be no way of adjusting the timeout!
I've checked the settings and the manual and just don't find anyway to change that, so I have to keep moving the jog dial or pressing the shift key
did I miss something somewhere? it just seems to be a really really short timeout

re: quick dimming
Masseur, I agree a real pain especially when you trying to read an ebook using Mobipocket and the display goes dim.

no there's no way to change the backlight fade time.
Another annoying thing: Predictive text is nice but shouldn't it give the option of leaving a space after the inserted word, cause without it u have to needlessly press the space key every time u insert a predicted word, why make us press extra keys? |

ok, I've figured out the backlight dimming. There are three settings, all in Tools -> Control Panel - > Device that affect it
by default we have the auto mode that simply dimms the backlight to OFF after about 15-20 seconds
Going into the backlight settings in the Device menu, you can change the handhels setting to ON. This means the light will remain on indefinitly, however it can be restricted to only be ON for the period specified by the Power Save settings (also found in the backlight menu). When that time expires the backlight will be switched off.
Unfortunately the backlight still starts to dim after the 15 to 20 seconds mentioned earlier BUT... it only dims to the level that is set in the Backlight -> Brightness - > Handheld (dimmed) setting so if you adjust that to the same level as the Handheld (normal) level (by default 90%), then you get a constant backlight for the period specified in the Power Save settings after which the backlight then goes off.
so, to summarize, go to Tools - Control Panel -> Device -> Backlight
in Settings, set Handheld to ON
in Brightness -> backlight set Handheld (dimmed) to the same level as Handheld (normal)
in Power Save tick the Power save enabled and set the "active after" to the backlight timeout you want
