CMOS is better than CCD. End of story.

Because they no longer suffer from noise and sampling artifacts. They did, say, three years ago. Besides, CMOS chips consume a lot less power than CCD chips do, and are significantly faster in everyday use.

Last year we saw T270/T280, R300 & R306 on Jan, 24th. If there's anything alike this year in the fortnight before MWC, I'm not interested at all.

That's not the case for phones at least. If you even compare 903SH (the best 3.2 mp phone there is) with even the SO905iCS (Japanese Cybershot), the photos on the 903SH are far better than the SO905iCS.

Maybe when the Japanese Cybershot comes out from AU by KDDI (perhaps in the spring/summer collection), we can compare shots of this phone with Sharp's ProPix line (SH-01A, SH-03A, 930SH) and see which one is better.

Either way, Sharp leads Japan (could possibly the world) in terms of mobile innovation. Sony Ericsson is doing poorly in Japan, even though it has the technological capability of doing a lot better. For instance:

Best Screen Displays:
- Sharp AQUOS
- Sony Ericsson BRAVIA
- Panasonic VIERA

Best Cameras:
- Sharp PROPIX
- Sony Ericsson CYBERSHOT
- Casio ELIXM

Top Phone Compaines:
- Sharp
- Panasonic
- Fujitsu

The reason why Sony Ericsson is doing relatively poorly compared to other companies is because Sony Ericsson doesn't produce phones for all Japanese carriers (now only for AU which isn't the most popular in Japan), it doesn't package all it's goodies into one phone, and styling isn't popular for the Japanese.

Oh one more thing, judging from the hinge on the Premier Walkman Flip phone for AU by KDDI (Japanese), it looks like the phone can be flipped vertically and horizontally... like the W44S:

I still find for normal use my 903sh camera better to use than so905ics (both shooting at 3mp), if anything only low light to night shots (photo light is better) are better on the so905ics. But not liking the detail loss on the so905ics. Maybe its just the optical zoom, or the large screen, but battery life is a lot worse on so905ics than say a 904sh with vga screen. Most likely screen difference, but its noticable in heavy use of the camera.

@clauf
What we're dealing with on the mobile camera front is poor software, not hardware. Sony Ericsson's so-called Cyber-shot camera software algorithms are extremely poor (and so are Sony's, even in their dslr range, btw).

I would agree that CCD sensor *can* produce slightly (and I do mean slightly) better pictures as long as we're talking small sensors - I think this is what you mean. On larger sensors, APS-C and full frame, you won't notice any difference. The large camera manufacturers wouldn't make use of CMOS sensors in their high-end offerings unless the sensors performed accordingly. Just have a look at the Nikon D700 or D3 - the best cameras in the world when it comes to light sensitivity, both making use of full frame CMOS sensors.

Anyway, seems we're off-topic.
