Has anyone found any navigation software working with X1 yet?

TomTom 7 VGA Version works great in my X1!

Can I download a test version somewhere?

I also felt the same thing, for WM6.1 a 384Mb ram is insanely Huge! we all know that samsung i900 is running WM6.1 very fast even with only 128Mb, even the more performance hungry Win XP runs pretty well with 384Mb onboard. also if ever WM7 will be able to run on the X1 hardware then that's great!

A200 is obviously built on the philosophy of Ericsson development, however the Media Manager in SE phones has Sony written all over it. I don't know if SE outsource that work to Sony or what, but it has the same bloatware signature as Sony software. No doubt the X1 panels are also Sony influenced.

This is probably why the X1 has so much RAM, to give the Panels a chance at working well. Keep in mind the panels are like Active Desktop - each panel is an application running in memory in realtime.

TBH the panels would be almost as usefull if they were simply shortcuts with thumbnails, but they are more than that. The content of each panel is dynamically updated.

I think this is the real reason the X1 has so much RAM.

Which begs the question, how sweet X1 will run with panels disabled

btw, basic XP installs run well with 384, but "the most performance hungry" XP systems?

It would be nice.

Once you've used a phone with an acelerometer you do get quite used to it.

well I find the n95 screen orientation with the accelerometer quiet useless After turning it on for 1 day, I had to switch it off hehe...

fair enough, to each their own. personally I like not having to think about it - it just happens automatically. The only time I turn it off is when I'm lying down using the phone - because then the auto rotate means the screen is landscape when I want it portrait. Now if the acelerometer could tell if I myself was horizontal or vertical - that would be perfect!

I wish it had more storage because then i wouldn't have to download and delete my emails all the time. It would be really nice to have all my emails downloaded and ready to read which obviously amounts to more than 400mb, so internal memory-wise, it's just as good as my 64mb, 2 year-old P990.

hmm, I see your point. I looked at this with regard to syncing mail with outlook, and realised that my outlook mail file is 3GB plus, and came to the conclusion that for now atleast, even with large internal memory keeping all my mail on the device is not practical.

Note you can elect to keep attachments on a memory card which helps a lot if your mail space shortage is because you want to keep lot's of emails that have picture and video attachments.

Also, if you archive outlook to say the last three months or so, and save attachments on the card, then there will be more than enough internal memory on the X1.

If you don't use outlook and are only talking about email you receive straight to the device, I'd be surprised if you'd need more than 100MB for email storage if saving attachments on the mem card.

Failing that, if you are prepared to hack the registry, you can save ALL email as well as attachments, on the memory card.

Your suggestion sounds like a lot of work and even if it wasn't so it might void my warranty so, I prefer it to work out of the box. It might seem impractical now, but eventually data transfer and storage solution will be developed enough for local storage of emails to be the next natural thing and SE has yet to lead the way anywhere. GPRS/WAP was perceived as impractical during its commercial inception somewhat 4 years ago and now it has become a mobile data revolution. So yeah, I was expecting SE to provide solutions more than merely follow what others do within the 'norm'. That's how you get ahead of the competition IMO.

Editing the registry DOES NOT invalidate your warranty. There is nothing you can do to the phone with a registry editor that you can't undo with a master reset. There is no danger of frying your erom...

A lot of work?? It's a few simple steps.

WM is a relatively open OS we are not talking SE A200 FS hacking here....

This is the strength of WM, the fact that it IS flexible unlike s60 or even worse s40 and A200.

I gave you a solution if that is too much effort (it only has to be done once anyway) then you obviously have other reasons why you don't like WM.

People really have to stop thinking of the X1 as a proprietary SE device and realise it's a Windows Mobile HTC device with all the advantages that the WM platforms entails.

btw, the lack of ability to "out of the box" save all emails on the memory card IS NOT an SE fault - it's a standard aspect of any WM device in the market. So direct your complaint at Microsoft not SE.

(in fact A200 phones allow saving of messages to memory card, so it's obviously just a windows thing. Possibly SE have even designed the X1 interface this way, but I doubt it. I expect it will be the same as all other WM devices)

I guess its more about how well the software was implemented for it to work well

And the delay of switching the orientation with the n95 just make it worse.

Just wondering what phone is it that you use for the auto rotation?

See my avatar

It's quick enough for my needs. I also find I use the shake to randomise feature quite often. The track advance feature needs work though.

Well, since Esato is an SE centric forum, I'll direct the blame to SE for not stepping up to the game and enabling users to download all emails out of the box by having bigger internal space which is ridiculously doable by now for the absolutely creme de la creme of SE devices

sorry but i think you are nitpicking.

There is a solution, that works well, that is easy enough to implement. If the fact it is not enabled out of the box is going to stop you from buying an X1 then I think you are being short sighted. Of course if you have other reasons then fair enough but the email saving issue of itself is a non-issue as far as I am concerned.

X1 is a smartphone not a feature phone. It's expected that the functionality can be enhanced by the end user.

I'm hardly nitpicking when other smartphone players in the game have given us the 8gb internal memory option for their best high end devices, let alone a multimedia (among other capabilities X1 boasts of having) smartphone which is not unprecedented for SE (W960 remember?). You can't seriously think I'm nitpicking?

Well that is the beauty of WM. You can buy the X1, and go online and download Manilla for it too (Touchflo3D). Chances are someone somewhere has already made the software tweaks already and made such things available for download, so with as huge a change as WM7, even if it isnt available as a formal firmware upgrade, someone in XDA developers wont rest until they crack it for the current generation devices. God bless those XDA developers... But having talked to different WM users, and played around with it abit I understand it better now. The ones who did nothing to alter what they got out of the box complained it was 'sh*t', whereas the ones who got involved and downloaded new apps and tweaks and hacks said it was brilliant and they'd never go back. So I suppose it depends what you would want it for at the end of the day, but you can get it to match your taste one way or another.
