iPhone.........3.50........5.88......480x320 = 153600....26122....171
Omnia ........ 3.20........5.00......400x240 = 96600....19200 .....160

I didn't know that X1 has exact twice the resolution as Omnia. That mean that the normal 3rd party apps out there ain't exactly catered for Omnia's resolution as well? And so if Omnia does not have compatibility issues then X1 shouldn't?

@pinguino2,

Very informative post. I was assuming that DPI was calculated dividing the diagonal size in pixel (sqrt(800^2+480^2)) by the diagonal display size (3 inches for the X1's display), hence my smaller 310 DPI.

Edit: Actually, Wikipedia says that PPI (not DPI which some manufacturers rate at the subpixel size) for a monitor is calculated as per above.

I agree with you. A good program code should take the screen information from the OS API's and the graphic processor. Like a desktop application runs in any screen resolution that your system have.

25 yrs ago OS were very basic and we had code all that. Not today. OS are more advanced. However I'm not a mobile developer and I hear that concern from a few people, I don't know if they are developers and thay use a few standars screens QVGA, VGA etc. but every day there are new resolutions, like Omnia and Xperia and internet tablets. These systems are running on WM. I don't know if the challenge is with other OS.
Note: The total number of pixels is actually 4 times more.

As a more varied choice of display resolutions and aspect ratios comes onto the market than ever before software developers are realising that software can't simply be hard coded to certain resolutions or aspect ratios.

The days of software that can't approriately resize to the available screen will slowly disappear.

Most apps will display fine on xperia. Many of the display problems you hear about come from older apps designed for 320x240 displays being installed on 240x240 "square" aspect ratio displays. This is not a problem if the display is the same or larger in both dimensions.

For example my new samsung has a square display of 320x320. 320x240 designed apps run on it fine, but not on my 240x240 HP HW6915, because the app fits within the resolution of the samsung but not within the HP display.

About the tiny font in opera 9.5, it's normal it's exactly the same on the diamond, you just double tab on an area to zoom. At this level it's physically readable but it's just for you to know where to zoom

when you think about it you can't have it both ways anyway. You can't have a page small enough to see the whole page AND be able to read it at the same time. Even if the resolution was fine enough, it would still be too uncomfortable to read.

The key is to have an easy and quick way of switching between whole page view and readibility view.

The real point here is, I have this already on my QVGA Tytn II running Opera 9.5. Still the same just-about-understandable full page view for navigation, and nicely readable zoomed in view when you tap. Because of its small size, the higher DPI screen on the X1 actually adds nothing to this process at all, other than a little extra smoothness. The legibility, and even the amount of information shown, is exactly the same.

I saw an HTC Libra today and man, that put me off Windows Mobile forever. How bland can you get? Plain black text on white background everywhere, and then when switched onto its side to type, the wallpaper image stretched and looked 100% nasty. Methinks that the X1 will only sell to business users after non-business users have seen Windows Mobile in action.

I think personally the smoother text can sometimes be more readable, and video and imaging can be better on a high dpi screen.

But I don't think the dpi really has anything to do with the functionality of the browser. Personally even if a 3in screen had a fine enough dpi that a standard 1024x768 web page could be read without zooming in, it would be too uncomfortable to read easily other than for those with very good eyesight.

well, people who like WM like it for reasons other than the coolness or beauty of it's interface

But as to all black on white, I'm not quite sure I agree with you - I get a lot more colour on my samsung i780

It did have some colour, like the bars at the bottom and top of the screen which were coloured similarly to the task bar in Vista, but I think it was the text message inbox that was all black text on a white background. I can't see that kind of blandness appealing to average phone users.

the wm market doesn't appeal to the average phone user anyway. They will all buy SE A200's, Nokia's, Samsung and LG's.

I do agree the WM interface is bland though. Personally it's the usability of a device that excites me not the flashiness of the interface.

Yeah true, for me I have to have a bit of eye-candy. I am a graphic design student after all!
