sent e-mail to customer service a while back. here's their answer:

Quote:

Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson Customer Care Center.

This is regarding your inquiry concerning the Sony Ericsson mobile phone T610. The size of a picture in T610 under Memory Status and Picture Information is different. This is the reason:

1. When pictures are received by the phone they are decoded to an ebm-file (Ericsson bitmap) stored in the file system, which means that there are two copies of the picture.
2. The size in (INFORMATION) does not include the ebm-files.
3. The size in (MEMORY STATUS) includes the size of the ebm-files.
4. When you send a picture , it is the size in the (INFORMATION) that is sent.

more precise than the "raw format" explantion.

I hope that the upcoming K700 & S700 don't need this ebm file in order to maximize memory.

Why did SE ever put this stupid ebm crap in the fones. I wouldnt mind waitin a cuple of more seconds for it to load if it meant more mem. space. I mean in a pathetic 2Meg memory, you need all the space you can get. pitty. The t610 is such an extraordinary fone! Oh and i really doubt the k700/s700 havin this feature as they're probably gonna be faster fones and wont need to have faster accesing time.
