What is "Adapt to lighting conditions" actually doing? This (left on, right off):

It will use light sensor to detect the light in your surrounding and automatically set brightness.

I thought so too, until...

...what I've always accepted as the automatic brightness adjustment. But this does not appear to be so, but the setting changes the contrast and viewing angle of the Xperia Z.

Anyway regardless of opinion of me or anybody else who owns a Samsung phone for even daring to comment in this thread, ive finally got my hands on the Xperia Z today. So heres what i thought:

Its actually a very nice phone. Its much better than every other Xperia phone so far, so Sony are definitely making good progress now. When i picked it up, it felt incredibly solid with absolutely no creaking or worry that if i pressed too hard on the casing anywhere it would creak, break or split.

The weight was nice, solid but not too heavy. The overall size of the phone was large however, a little too large. I can imagine liking the phone if i bought it for such a nice feel in the hand but the square corners were a bit too sharp. Much better than the Xperia S though which design i still hate to this day. Side by side in the store was the S, T and the Z. So it was obvious to see the improvements Sony are making.

The UI was fast, but not faster than any other JB running phone. Reports of laggy interfaces were not present, but then i assume thats when you make the phone actually work hard such as when multitasking ram heavy apps. I also liked the pin spot sized LED at the top of the phone to indicate charging.

As for what i didnt like, there wasnt much to be honest. I didnt like the square corners digging into my palm but thats something which comes through such a design. It just feels more pronounced as the phone is glass and not polycarbonate like the Lumia series of phones which are also as square.

I didnt like the silly flap over the charging port, but again thats a necessity of a phone which is water proofed. Ive never been a fan of Sony's Android skin, its rather dull imo which hasnt much colour to it. It also lacked many of the cool widgets and functionality im used to with Touchwhiz.

Lastly, keeping in mind i only spent 15 minutes with the phone in the store and there were staff constantly badgering me to buy a phone (as phone shop staff do), came the screen. It was a good screen on the phone i tried but nothing really special when you come from a phone with a super amoled display. Thats not necessarily a bad thing as im probably used to colours being a bit too colourful these days on my Galaxy S3 display. Sony dont help their own case here though, using a grey theme with grey icons. To them it may look cool and minimalist, but to people they might want to win over from Samsung or HTC their UI is... i dunno, it feels like a tv screen with the colour setting turned right down to low.

As for viewing angles and the far too bright greys, the phone i used was just like people have mentioned and complained about. The view did almost disappear at anything above 45 degrees of tilt vertically, but it shouldnt put people off the phone. The brightness was set to 100%, so i went into the settings and turned it to 50%. It went very dark indeed, so i can imagine why people are complaining. So, its possible a software issue with the screens. But as for it being low in contrast and feeling of poor quality, yes it did, but probably not as bad as some people would complain about.

If i hadnt been using a super amoled screen this past year, i probably wouldnt notice. But now for me it would probably be a deal breaker.

So overall, the phone was very nice. Sony have done a good job with it and its certainly impressive in its own right. But would i buy one ? the answer would be a simple no. Sony have done a good job, but i dont think the phone is any better than their rivals. The HTC One is more interesting to me as it has more software innovation. And as for the impending Samsung announcement of their next device i can only imagine interest being lost in the Z. Which is a shame really because its a decent phone.

Its good news though, Sony are on the up and making some sort of comeback. If they were to adopt some other strategies a bit quicker and stuck them in the Z, it would probably stand a chance of clawing back some market share from its rivals.

As for HTC, i would be worried. Not this year, but 2014 ?

iPhone 5 vs Xperia Z vs Galaxy S3 vs Galaxy Note 2 Benchmark Comparison

Notice the samsung display has blue tints on white background. I don't understand how some people can even compare Samsung with Sony
T200 -> T68i -> T610 -> K700i -> P910i -> W800i -> P990i -> M600i -> P1-> Nokia E71 -> X1i -> X10 -> Arc S -> Sony Z1 -> Sony Z Ultra -> Sony Z3+ -> iPhone 6 -> iPhone 7 Plus -> iPhone X -> iPhone XS Max
