If it works on ME, 98, should work on Win2k also. Will try and let you know. I dont want to spend money on the BT dongle now. I have already spent a fortune on the phone.

Ok, this is what I did yesterday on Win XP

1. Had already installed PC Suite and everything that came with it.

2. Ran the SE Dial Up Connection Wizard. It asked me to first *disable*
the USB port (Which is COM3 on my PC) in the Phone connection
manager (whose icon comes up in the task bar on the right bottom
of the screen). I did that.

Then it also asked me to *enable* COM3 by going into
SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL> PHONE CONNECTION MANAGER.
There I had only two listed COM1 and COM3. I *enabled* COM3
and *disabled* COM1.

3. Then opened my SEP900, went to the options under
CONTROL PANEL> CONNECTIONS> CABLE and switched over
to 'MODEM'.

4. I placed the phone on the SE DSS Sync Station. Since I had
asked the phone connection manager to NOT look for COM3, the
connection link did not try to connect to the P900. It stayed at
'disconnected' status.

5. Till now the SE Dial Up Connection Wizard was at the initial screen
waiting for me to press the OK button. I did so. It started searching
for connected phones. I found my P900 and popped up a bigger
screen. In that I think it asked me to install a MODEM. XP was
not able to locate for itself, so i tried selecting from the list. There
were three types in the SE list for modems. I chose the last one -
SEP900 Serial Modem. The other two were for Blue tooth and IR.
It installed the modem without asking for amy CD or such stuff.
Then it asked me to configure the Dial Up Connection. I did not
do much here, kept of pressing next. At the end, it asked me if I
wanted it to place an icon to the dial up connection on the desktop.
I said yes.

6. After the Wizard had finished, I double clicked on
the "MyP900Connection Dial Up Connection' shortcut the wizard
had placed on the desktop. It opened up the dialer. I asked it to Dial
the connection. It started dialing.

7. Unfortunaltely, my Hutch card for GPRS is not yet activated. It will
be done today!. But, however, when the phone started Dialing some
junk number, my SEP900 lit up and said 'Dialing that number', and it
was a 'DATA call'. I was also query the modem to get its
configuration from Windows>Device Manager>Modem. I suppose
that if XP can make the Phone dial a number, it means that it is
working as a modem, isn't it?

I will get the SIM enabled today and will let you know if it really works!. I think it should. Also note, that all the way, the only thing that I had to install was the PC suite for the P900. And I am not using bluetooth or IR.

**** => IT WORKED <= ****

Yeah guys, it worked. I am able to browse the net without any issues on my home PC *BY JUST USING THE DSS SYNC STATION* AND MY SEP900 as the modem.

I am putting some more facts down below for others to refer.

1. Connection is Hutch-Hyderabad(City)-AndraPradesh(State)-India.

Post paid - Rental - 99/- PM.
WWW-ACCESS - 499/- PM.

*Note, Hutch people call WAP services as "GPRS+MMS" and the
facility which allows one to browse the NET as "WWW-ACCESS".
The "GPRS+MMS" (WAP) Service is only 99/- PM. Its limited to
browsing on the phone. If you want to browse net on your PC,
you need the "WWW-ACCESS" type of connection.

When I initially opted for GPRS (I wanted to browse the net
on my PC), they enabled the WAP service. I played with my phone
for a while and then asked them to disable it and enable the
"WWW-ACCESS" facility. They did it immediately. They also
call the "WWW-ACCESS" facility as the "HUTCH-ACCESS" facility.

Also, the details of WAP are: "For hutch world monthly rental is
only Rs 99/- .and you have unlimited browsing and unlimited mms
and only thing which is charged is Wallpapers Rs 10 /-, Poly phonic
ringtones Rs 10/-, Games Demo version 20/- (only first two levels
of game), Full version 50 or 99/- (complete game). So if you are
only browsing and not downloading you would be charged only Rs
99/- monthly rental."

WAP (i.e, GPRS+MMS) was really nice on my SEP900, but I dont
need it, so I disbaled it. If you take WAP service, just send a
SMS to 123 as 'hw'. You will get all the settings smsed to you
in no time. You just have to go on 'saving' the settings and you are
off!.

EDITING -> Note, if you take "WWW-ACCESS" - you *dont* need
WAP!. Just install Opera browser and you will be able to use the
WWW-ACCESS connection to browse the WEB!. The internal
browser of SEP900 wont work because it needs WAP. But
Opera is a real browser and works real cool!

2. For "WWW-ACCESS", the only settings I had to make on my
SEP900 were, create a internet account with name 'www' and the
connection type as 'GPRS'. Thats the only settings on the phone.
As for the PC, I have already listed the steps above. Only the last
thing I had to do was to change the 'dial number' to
*99***1# and it connected without any problem.

Some problems i noticed were

1. When you reboot the machine, the USB port (COM3 in my case),
gets re-enabled in the 'phone connection manager' (right bottom
icon on the screen). One needs to disable it so that the phone
can again work as a modem. If you are using XP (as me), best
way is to hibernate.

2. Make sure the phone-cable connection is set to 'MODEM'. Otherwise,
it wont work as a modem!

3. Some times my SEP900 restarts due to heavy usage. I probably
need to free up some memory and increase the cache size, but
thats secondary now!.

4. I am using a DUAL SIM Card holder for my SEP900. I have one
Hutch and one BSNL connection. I find it annoying that I have to
turn the phone off to switch the SIM. Is there a way to do it
without havung to switch off the phone?

NOTE again that I am *NOT* using bluetooth or IR. Just plain DSS sync Station connected to XP!.

The Speed? - I just tried for 10 minutes. Speed was OK. Not very fast, but thats because I always compare it with my office net speed (which is enormous). I think at odd hours, the speed will be good. Will keep you posted. But sites like Yahoo etc opened in seconds.

Hmm, I dont have any MMS friends and have not tried it. But I guess it wont work with the www-access connection. Maybe some website (thru) opera allows you to send MMS? But that would be too ugly.

Also, regarding the speed, it gets maxed out at around 3KBPS (yeah three). If you use opera, the speeds seems ok. Make sure you ask AIRTEL - www-access speeds. I have heard that they charge 600/-, but feel hutch is more reliable.

Am on Hutch, and have both WWW and MMS (499+99). Had to get both as I needed both GPRS and MMS.

Am using the bluetooth interface for the modem n am getting about 5kBps almost all the time. Lemme check the speeds aft i configure the computer to go online thru the DSS-25. I tried AirTel's GPRS b4 getting Hutch, and it sucked.

@sbjg: PM me ya number aft u get MMS (wont work with jus WWW), n shall MMS u

5 kbps?..... hmmm .... i have heard & exp the fact that the Dss station is slow during data transfers. Dont know if that contributes to the speed slow down. Maybe bluetooth is faster, but cant say for sure. Good to know Airtel sucks. One annoying thing is when data transfer is in progress, one cant recieve incoming calls. It not even gives an alert : quite dangerous if someone wants to call u urgently.

Hey, you CAN suspend the internet on hold and make/receive calls! Chek this: Go to Control Panel > Connections Tab > Internet Accounts > Other tab > Preferred Mode - Automatic. If you have it as GPRS only, u wont be able to make or receive calls. Hope tht helps...

I have set it Automatic, but I am damn sure that when the data transfer is in progress, it wont recieve any call nor will it give any alert. Also the P900 manual does 'warn' of this problem and says 'you might ,miss some calls!'.

Pretty dangerous huh? I read a P910 review which said the P910 would give an alert message and will fix this issue. You can try it out yourself. If you have Windows, put it on the 'Windows Update Mode'. That will get the net connection choked up and the data tranfser at its peak. Then try calling, it wont pick up.
