The symbol means that the phone "sees" other networks but is forbidden to log onto 'em. Simple.

I'm sorry but that's incorrect. That would give you not only an icon but also the text 'SMS calls only' something that infrequently occurred when I lost my T Mobile network.

@Vlamm: yes, that happens to u (and to me too sometimes) cuz the phone sees other national networks .Ok, so i should've reformulate that: the signs appears ussualy when u travel to another country with ur sim (as happened to Masseur). It happened to me when a traveled thru Europe with a french sim.I just observed the effect but i can't explain it technically.I don't know why i don't get "SOS calls only" for example, and that phone with a red line.

I have to enquire and get back to u with a technical reply

[edit] @701...... even when travelling abroad without roaming you'd still be able to call emergency services..... for example when i roamed in the US with a prepaid voda SIM from NL..... it wouldn't give me the 'striped out phone' icon...... but it didn't give me the 'SOS Calls only' text either .... but I COULD dial 911 nonetheless

i got that symbol thosands of times on my phone...
called up sony ericsson support and they told me it was network related

gave my telco provider a call and they told me it was because the phone connects to the base station but the base station does not record it.

means although i get a full signal bar on my phone, im unable to receive calls.
but as soon as i make a call, the symbol disappears and the phone receives incoming calls happily.

i suspect its due to overloading of the base station
(my telco provider just bought over another telco recently)
this problem never occured before the takeover

but from what i see, you cannot even MAKE calls, which seems odd with regards to vlammetje's guide book scan. i suggest you give your telco provider a ring
